Spring: A Novel (Seasonal Quartet)

I have yet to get Summer because I can't stand that this series is coming to an ending, I have so loved Autumn, Winter, Spring.....Spring is a very interesting take on the refugee crisis/immigration in the usual Ali Smith way. Lovely characters, lovely insight into this modern world. I really can't say enough about what a delight these books have been to read. Ali Smith is a very gifted author, I've read a couple of her other works and am just so grateful I found her through these seasons books.

So excited to finally own this series! This book took forever in the mail, and it was obviously not brand new.

Ali Smith is a brilliant writer. The Seasonal Quartet is magical, part fairytale, part devastating social commentary and beautifully written.

Reading works by Ali Smith becomes an addiction. Her ability to play with words and themes is unparalleled. This book, Spring, the third in her Seasonal Quartet, is exceptional.

“Spring” has a lot going on. The third entry in Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet about life in Britain during Brexit, “Spring” takes the interesting approach of telling a story through the eyes of “extras.” The broken characters we think the novel is about are in fact witnesses to a deeper and more compelling story that filters through their fractured viewpoints. What we see, instead is the impact of those events on them. In a brief coda, we see how Spring has treated these bit players writ large, and it is in Smith’s depiction of rebirth that the deeper political message comes forward.This is a chaotic time that has impacted people regardless of their political persuasion. What Smith has offered is an insight to rebirth when people remember the fundamental goodness that is hidden by rhetoric and lies. For those willing to engage with the repressed and reviled, to find a way to help and redeem their slighted morals, there is a path to a new Spring.

For me, Ali Smith’s Spring was the perfect read. Helped me understand what is going these days and allowed me to “live in hope”

Complex and interesting language. Engaging characters. Excellent description and application of the theme of Spring.

As usual, I know I need to reread Ali Smith. This one left me with hope for Time’s Factory. That spring might continue to work its magic; especially if I can “gelf.”

Had to read for a course. I have not read the others in the quartet but this one was definitely hard to read. The characters were unlikeable and it’s clear that Smith is trying too hard to prove something but comes off as being pretentious instead. Would not recommend.

The writing often reminds me of an old slide projector, with each photographic slide having a unique memory, but still interconnected with each other. Ali Smith directs us towards the future by talking about Now, and by remembering past. We often get a flavour of "history repeats itself," leading to the important question, what are we going to do about it?The characters never over power the story. They act as catalysts nudging us towards the bigger picture. After reading her books, I always feel like something has shifted inside me, that I am not the same person as I was before.Probably, a change of season!.I really can't explain the book to you, but I want you to experience it for yourself. You don't need to read Autumn or Winter before Spring, but they do help to get acquainted with her style of writing. However, I found Spring to be quite easier than the previous two!

This is Britain now. This book describes what it is to live in Britain in 2019. The previous two books in the seasonal quartet looked at the Brexit vote, Trump’s election, and this one seems to have a central theme of borders and immigration (although you could argue that immigration seems to have been an overarching theme so far).There is so much going on beneath the surface in these books if you want to research and find out, but it is just a fascinating and exciting book to read just for the joy of reading it.I loved the “What we want”, “Any time at all. Here take it. Take my face”, and “Now for 140 seconds of cutting edge realism” chapters. They reflect society today so well: how people hide behind social media and the internet to say whatever they want to without fear of any repercussions, and the violence behind what they say (both obvious and insidious).Ali Smith is just so clever, and I love her books. I can’t wait to see what Summer will hold for us.
