Great recording of opera arias by Leonardo Vinci
This CD is a real delight. Franco Fagioli is up there with the best countertenors of the moment (Cencic, Sabata, Mehta, Sabadus, Orlinski) and his recording of Handel arias in 2018 was outstanding. This time it is operatic arias by Leonardo Vinci, relatively unknown to me apart from the man having met an untimely end in 1730. Reputedly one of Handel’s favourite Italian composers and Handel used at least fifteen numbers by Vinci in the pasticcio L’Elpidia which was performed at the King’s Theatre in May 1725. There are several high quality arias here, the recording acoustic is great, the balance between singer and instrumentalists is perfect and Il Pomo d’Oro must be the best period ensemble currently performing. The whole recording is truly outstanding and highly recommended.
