On point portrayal of love and loss
Having been widowed very recently, I absolutely love this film. It does an amazing job of showing how everyone grieves differently, and it portrays perfectly the same numbness I felt in the first few weeks after losing my husband. He was my soulmate and love of my life but I was in such a state of shock when everything first happened that many times I questioned if something was wrong with me. I couldn't cry in front of his family or friends, not even one tear... Even now, one year later, for some reason when I'm around his family I just can't let myself cry. Perhaps out of guilt of not wanting to cause them more sadness, or perhaps because I never truly felt accepted by them...I digress...This film is a new favorite for me. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing as always, as is Naomi Watts. I will definitely be watching this again. Highly recommended to anyone but especially those of us who may feel alone or misunderstood through our grief journey. Hugs to anyone going through the pain of loss! You are not alone ❤

Sometimes answers are provided without even asking the question
Sometimes a midlife crisis doesn't happen in the middle of your life. Sometimes it happens when you're 15. Or 25. Or 42. Or 50.One night i was playing Tomb Raider on PS4 and i was, for whatever reason, unable to get past a certain level. Tried and tried and tried until finally something in me let loose and i screamed. I wanted to destroy something, and it wasn't going to be the TV, a window, or furniture - i focused all my rage on the PS4 controller. Knowing full well these are pricey little fkers, but not caring, i flung that controller against the wall and floor until it was a crumpled mess. Mission accomplished; rage gone. The next day i purchased a new controller. For whatever reason the great spirits above somehow prompted me to watch this film. And then i fully understood why i demolished that controller the night before. We like to label certain behaviors so we can easily categorize people. Toxic male. Prone to violence. Anger issues. And paradoxically, this make the problem worse - the "problem" being repression of emotions. The truth is, none of us knows wtf we're doing here, or how to truly be a decent human being. We get labels thrown at us so we mask our emotions and act accordingly so god forbid, we're not labelled a "bad person."This film was refreshing to experience. The authenticity of the main character came rushing at me like tidal wave. A man's wife dies in the first five minutes of the film. So he copes with it the only way he knows how: by demolishing everything in sight.Sometimes, the way to rebuild is to tear everything down. To swear. To fight. To scream.I don't know what set me off with that PS4 game. Maybe the impending doom of knowing my dog with heart issues was slowly declining in health. Maybe that i screwed up a 10 year relationship that eventually petered out into a passionateless friendship. Maybe the realization that i had given up on my dreams of fame and success. The PS4 controller was about $50 to replace, and it was the best money i had spent in a long time. Coupled with watching this film, it was the catharthis that i needed at just the right time.

Amazing.
I dont understand why this isn't higher in rank or more spoken about. This movie is easily one of my favorite Jake G. films. He grips you into his own despair and take you along a ride full of ups and downs. Stop wasting your time with junk movies like Marvel films and watch this.

100% relatable: eccentric characters in an odd & compelling story
Brilliant film that will make you laugh your ass off...and bawl your eyes out. The characters are, oddly enough given their high degree of eccentricity (& I'm pretty damn eccentric), highly relatable. If you have ever suffered a loss, had an existential crisis of any kind or been through an exceptionally challenging divorce (of the lies & secrets being revealed variety, not the petty bicker and argue over a CD box set variety) then there's no way you won't connect with this in a huge way. Watch and enjoy in all its amazing and beautifully bizarre glory

Witness a Raging Neurotic Break
An investment banker is riding in the car alongside his wife, who is driving, and their banter reveals they have a marriage transitioning to the comfort of several years in. Then, the car is broadsided, driver's side. When he, unscathed, is told in the hospital waiting room that she is dead, his rage is only suppressed by his exhaustion and hunger. Then, the vending machine betrays him. Unable to get any satisfaction, he is left numb. And hypersensitive. And curious. He uncovers more and more, and he uncovers more and more betrayal. And his wife is dead, so they are out of time to work it out. Yet all of his memories of her, seen in flashback, are fond and beautiful. Was he a fool? Was he purposefully ignorant because he was in the marriage for the money? Will a scavenger hunt reveal the truth? Will Demolition reveal the ultimate clue?

Can't believe I watched it all
This will be on my worst ever list. There are lines in this movie you can't "unhear." I thought by the previews that this might be a deep exploration of a man who can't understand his emotions, but instead it is an over the top farce with characters who are all of huge mess. Ridiculous scenarios - bashing and bulldozing an entire house (yet his bathroom stays intact somehow), letting a teenage boy shoot him (huh?), flashbacks to a completely non-dimensional wife, a pot-smoking customer service mess of a woman, just shallow and senseless and disjointed and I wish I had turned it off way before the end. I can't find one redeeming things about this movie. Waste of time and money. Hugely disappointing.

A compelling look at loss, and change.
Very compelling drama about loss, and change. Gyllenhaal is brilliant (as usual), and the rest of the cast does a fine job. Watching the "Demolition" of the Gyllenaal's character while he works through the demolition of his old life is gripping - in a what will happen next sort of way. This film is definitely worth your time. There will be some tears, (anyway some parts made me cry), and also some laugh out loud moments. Mostly it is a strong story acted well.

Overlooked gem of a film.
Having been really impressed with Dallas Buyers Club and Wild - Demolition completes Jean Marc Vallee's hat trick. Odd, quirky, stand alone - great acting, editing, music - ultimately uplifting.Bombed at the box office - no idea why....

Excellent movie!
This is by director Jean-Marc Vallee; mature subject, I thoughtit was a bit long and strange at first but the second half of the storywill blow you away; you have talented jake gyllenhall playinga man who does almost everything to ignore the grief of his wife'sdeath, seems cold and disorganized; he meets a woman who findsa confident in him as she is in a bad marriage and the hidden pearlin this movie is a colossal performance by young Judah Lewis,a teenager with a very bad attitude but you'll find out later why;his character becomes pivotal in helping Jake's character face his demonsand in return, he gives much needed friendship and his non judgementalattitude helps the sad and angry teenager come out of his shell,a deep bond results from this very original situation; it'sthe kind of movie that doesn't give the plot away and is moreprovocative and needs your attention if youwant to truly appreciate it; I loved it and enjoyed it moreafter the first view. No Hollywood bing band, special effectsjust watch and don't think kind of story; if you like a well written well directed andpowerful performances, you'll enjoy this one. I have my copyand will watch it again. Highly recommended!!

Great movie. Great product
Writing a review for buying a movie off Amazon is weird. Am I writing a review of the movie or of the product? Product wise. It came in great condition. Looked how it should looked. Played how it should play. Movie review. I loved this movie.
