"As GMTV anchor, I interview hundreds of people every year. However well they interview, every single person would find it easier to explain their case by following these simple principles." EAMONN HOLMES, GMTV Presenter "[Drop the Pink Elephant]…tackle[s] every aspect of personal communication in a crisp, entertaining style." THE PLAIN ENGLISH SOCIETY "There can be no whitewash at the White House." (Richard Nixon). These nine words turned the American nation against their President. Why? Because people hadn’t linked the White House with a cover up until Nixon himself made the connection. His own denial created the story. It is perhaps the most famous Pink Elephant in history. But what exactly is a ‘Pink Elephant’? Pink Elephants are the unnecessary negatives that clutter your conversation and meaning, sending out the wrong signals to anyone you communicate with. In Drop the Pink Elephant, Bill McFarlan reveals how to avoid the deadly trap of allowing poor communication skills to obscure your meaning and reduce your effectiveness. Drop the Pink Elephant is filled with helpful, simple and practical advice on how to make your words count for more. Put these straightforward lessons into practice and you will notice immediately how much more effectively you are able to communicate with others. Sharpen your conversation by: FIRST SPOTTING, THEN DROPPING THE PINK ELEPHANT GETTING RID OF THE JARGON LEARNING TO SPEAK IN PICTURES RECOGNISING WHEN YOU SHOULD APOLOGISE OR THANK PEOPLE CAPTIVATING AN AUDIENCE N.B. No animals were hurt in the making of this book. (Can you spot your first Pink Elephant?)

The Etiquette Of Interpersonal Communication
This is a refreshing book. It's well-written, entertaining, and practical. The author is very British, which to me makes it easier to deal with than some of our more crude communication books such as the Gentle Art Of Verbal Self-Defense series. We don't need verbal "self-defense" if we learn to communicate properly in the first place. This is nothing new in this book. Please read it anyhow. The presentation is clear and polite, and encourages us to communicate clearly and honestly rather than attempt to manipulate the listener. A good idea all around. The first time I was reading this book my husband phoned from work saying he was going to ditch an after-work meeting and make up an excuse the next day. I read him the three "R"s the author suggests and asked my husband to try using them. He did, with enormous success. He was excused from the meeting, not required to do any "make up" work, and thanked for being up front about his situation."Drop The Pink Elephant" is full of simple little gems that have moved me back on track with my own communication. My first college degree was in Interpersonal Communication with an Applied Linguistics minor, but over the decades my communication had gotten sloppy. With the help of this ingenious little book, in my daughter's words, I "make sense again.""Pink Elephant" should be required reading (and studying) for all high school and/or college students. The world would be a safer, saner place if everyone practiced its simple suggestions.

A Guide to Improving Communication Skills
"Drop the Pink Elephant" is a book focused on teaching readers how to communicate more effectively. Grounded in many real-world examples, Bill McFarlan organizes the subject manner in a logical and meaningful manner.Through the extensive use of visual images and anecdotes, McFarlan covers key communication skills in an accessible and humorous manner. It is rare to find a book that bridges the gap between "doing" and "reading" as does "Drop the Pink Elephant."I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in improving their ability to communicate.

Drop the Pink Elephant
I first read this book several years ago and it bears re-reading. Communication is not an exact science and anything we can do to make our communications easy to understand the more likely we are to get our message over to the people who need to hear it. Apart from the quirky title and the pink elephant cartoons and footprints throughout this book it does have some serious messages for everyone not just in the workplace. How often do you say something and mean the opposite? How often have people interpreted what you've said in completely the wrong way? This book will show you how you can say things so that people will get the message that you want them to receive. It will also tell you how not to bore your listeners to tears by telling them at length about things in which they can have no possible interest. The book is about listening as well as talking and about all forms of communication not just speech. Any form of instant communication can lead you into all sorts of problems if you don't think about what you've written before you press the send button. Read this book and think twice or three times before you send your tactless communications into cyberspace and alienate the people you're supposed to be getting o your side.

How to communicate positively and engage others with your messages
In my work I have read many books covering many parts of self development, a team member suggested this one and so I approached it with no prior knowledge. Drop the Pink Elephant is written by Bill McFarlan who has extensive work experience and stories from the world of broadcasting and media. This has lead him to develop his thoughts on what works in communicating clearly with others. Some of his thoughts are undoubtedly taken from others, this is not only referenced by the quotes, but also some of the facts he presents (e.g. around communication) without any credit given to the sources. This is probably because of the writing style chosen to engage with readers, however it disappointed me as I feel it would have enhanced the credibility of the thoughts further rather than appearing to pass off other's research as his own.On the positive side, the lessons are really simple and some of the stories are excellent in enhancing and demonstrating the benefits in positive self-presentation. I have regularly interviewed people in my recent career and found myself strongly agreeing with his observations around the way candidates present them-self.I can see this as a book that some will really like and benefit from, as the methods will make a different. I am slightly disappointed by the presentation of the book and that lost a star for me.

Stating the obvious...
I've met Bill and seen him at network marketing events and a friend had mentioned this book. What he talks about is so obvious, but we ALL do it. Practice how you say what your say. Stop painting yourself into a corner. I'll be listening to him on stage in September, so may pick up more tips. Good read, now put it in to practice

An easy, entertaining read chock-full of good advice
This was the subject for my business book club last month and coming after a string of worthy tomes by US authors, it came as a refreshing change. As we do at book club, the things I didn't like first: I hated the cartoons and the "Pink Elephant!" alerts are a bit overused, but for the most part, I enjoyed reading it and I liked Bill's anecdotes about his own shortcomings, which are believable and therefore I could identify with them. My fellow book club members were almost unanimous in describing the book as lightweight or even trite, and yet the overwhelming reaction was positive, because though the content may be pretty obvious, it raises the question "Do I do it myself?" You therefore quickly identify where you could improve your communication skills, whether that's at home or work and I'm all for a book that helps people to be nicer to one another.

Useful Advice
Though I've not finished it, I am finding the book both useful and informative - certainly one of the key messages helped me get shot of a doorstep salesman the other day!Maybe it's as a result of me picking at it that I would say that it appears to be a bit fragmented.Overall a worthwhile purchase.

Great tips, easy and pleasant to read
One of the few PD books I've been reading lately where I haven't had to force myself to carry on! A Uk author which I like for the straight talking, and several really useful tips. I'll be re-reading this for sure, and would buy any other titles that were relevant from this author.
