Patton bounces the Rhine...
In the spring of 1945, the Allied armies in the West prepared to continue their offensive into Germany. Among these was LTG George Patton's Third US Army. Patton had his eye on a promising crossing point of the Rhine River, near the cities of Nierstein and Oppenheim. Although Third Army wasn't scheduled for a lead role in the Allied offensive, Patton intended to make his own luck.In this well-written Osprey Campaign Series book, author Russ Rodgers narrates Patton's daring but well-planned thrust for the Rhine, pushing through the disintegrating remains of the German Army. Of note, the author develops the argument that while the German Army remained tactically lethal nearly to the end of the war, it was outclassed by the U.S. Army in Operational-level planning and maneuver. The text is very nicely supported with lots of period photographs and modern illustrations, maps, and battle diagrams. Well recommended as a concise study to students of the topic.
