Brilliant concept
These books come in many languages. Each 2-page spread is a scene - a city, farm, kitchen, etc. -- the scenes themselves are so detailed and interesting that you could spend a lot of time just using imagination to make up story lines to accompany them. Around the perimeter of the pages are thumbnail sized images pulled from the scene, along with the description of the item in the language chosen. The scenes are the same in all the books, but of course the language changes. Not only is it a brilliant way for the publisher to print more cost efficiently, but it's a great way to learn how to say the same word in several different languages. We have the Japanese book, are now enjoying the German and will soon get French. The kids love it because of the detail in the photos, and because it kind of works like a 'seek & find' book in reverse. I recommend this series highly.

Our new nighttime favorite!
We live in Germany and my kids go to German Kindergarten. They understand German, but are hesitant to speak. We read this book everynight, it is a very busy, picture book. So we play can you find the...The kids correct my pronunciation and then they find the items. We are learning together. I would buy this again! My kiddos are 3 & 5.

Great book for any age!! The illustrations are delightful.
The pictures are themed and the nouns with their articles are illustrated and labeled individually in the area that frames the large picture. It is especially nice that the large picture isn't littered with word labels. There are two pages with verbs, as well as pages with adjectives, prepositions. There is a word list at the back of the book. Best of all there are only German words with the pictures, so the German word is associated with an image not another language. I find it a fun way to increase my German vocabulary. There is also an internet link to be able to hear the words spoken.

Wonderful book!
Though 2 of my children are little, they hear big brother, mommy and daddy trying to say the words and they want to learn as well. We have not yet tried the internet linked guide yet, but sure do have fun sounding out the words myself. This has helped me bring my German back as my parents stopped speaking it when I was a child because the school system said that it would be too difficult for me to learn English if they hadn't stopped. Great book, wonderful pictures to go with the words!!

Good for vocabulary building.
The pictures are fun and the search gives enough time to digest the word and keep it in mind. The words are everyday words and this is a great way to build a vocabulary. The delivery was quick and the book was in good shape for a used book.

Wonderful, colourful!
This is very similar to a book I had as a child, when I was learning English (my first language). It is excellently laid out, beautifully illustrated and logically composed. I find it a joy to look through and its nature is well suited to my preferred method of learning a foreign language - through the eyes of a child, so to speak. It is very different from a lot of the other language books aimed at adult learners, which are often quite heavy to read, meaning progress can be slow. Obviously this is great for those who have a good photographic memory as the pictures are accompanied clearly by their names and genders. The book is usefully separated into vocab clusters, for example words relating to the living room are grouped around a picture of the living room, sports and hobbies likewise. This is the kind of book you can dip in and out of, flick to the bits relevant to your learning and pick things up as you go along, which gives you a sense of progress and achievement. There are lots of engaging scenarios (story boards) to put what you've learnt to use and a few grammatical pointers to clarify. I think the most important thing about learning a language is to find the method best suited to you, and I certainly would recommend this is you don't have the inclination to plough through a typically academic language text book, which can for some be dry, tedious and discouraging. Suitable for all levels and is a great companion to the Usborne Learning German book.

Build up your vocab (and thank God for the gender articles!).
I am what you call an "adult" learner, and find that, despite my weekly classes and separate lessons with an independent tutor, the one major problem that has to be addressed is the lack of vocabulary. At school I was a fan of flash cards, but nowadays I find this book is a good answer to those. At first it might feel that a lot of words are not really useful, but if you want to learn the language, ultimately, all the words in this book (and thousands more) will have to be learnt. "First Thousand Words in German" is a good point to start, covering all the useful topics, such as family, food, travel etc.One of the best features of the book - the nouns have gender articles in front of them! And for those of you who just starting to learn German - you will definitely appreciate that (I certainly did!).

Useful and enjoyably pictorial introduction to German
I actually bought this for my adult self rather than for a child, because I am travelling to Germany for the first time for many years this year, and although I can cope in French and Spanish I have hardly any knowledge of German. And yes, before you say it, I know that most Germans speak impeccable English but I just thought it would be fun - not to mention polite - to have some German words in my head. Each page carries multiple entertaining pictures and these are are grouped under subject headings, such as the home, the park, people etc. Inevitably, they are nouns rather than verbs or adjectives, so this limits the book in terms of building the ability to form sentences, but one key useful fact is that the article, die, der or das, is given every time, so there is at least some chance of learning the (to me) impenetrable genders of German words. Why for example, is a hammer 'der', an axe 'die' and a screwdriver 'das'? Search me. You just have to learn them.

A good start for grown ups, too
My German teacher has recommended this book, but I already had it. The pictures are colourful and amusing, and each day I try to learn two new words. The only disadvantage for a learner of the language that it teaches just the vocabulary, so that many individual words can be learnt but not as part of a sentence. Also, if I remember correctly, the dictionary at the back only gives German to English, whereas the other way around would be a bonus.I have not yet visited the website recommended. An extra section on the basic verbs and tenses would be even better. To beTo haveTo goTo make or doHowever, taken altogether it was a pleasant and entertaining way of improving one's language and vocabulary.

Useful and cute
As someone returning to German and trying to brush up on lost vocabulary I am finding this useful, even though it's clearly a kid's book. It's just more fun to sit browsing through this of an evening, rather than scrolling through long lists of vocab. More useful, I would imagine, in a classroom situation, as the large pictures would surely make for great Q and A sessions... direct the postman to the post office.... tell the little girl where her dog is.... describe what's under the window etc etc etc... The illustrations are very sweet too.

Associating words with pictures helps memorising new words
Associating the words with pictures helps memorising and expanding one's vocabulary, which of course is one important element of learning a foreign language.

I like it
Using this book to learn German. I like the sweet drawings, and appreciate the articles (der, die, das) in front of the words, since you need the articles for the correct case declensions. I have no problems with the book at all.

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR ANY BEGINNERS WANTING TO LEARN GERMAN.
The book is great, nothing wrong with it but I did get a little worried when I didn't receive it until 5 days later than another book that I had ordered at the same time. I really did think that it had got lost. As far as the book itself, brilliant, I definitely recommend.

So much fun!
I am 21 and learning to speak German for the sake of possible employment in 18 months time. I remember having this book for English as a child. Not all language learning skills are easy to grasp, this one is a bit more fun than just learning words from tables. Just add it to your resources.
