C-Wire, Remote Sensor Limitations, Use with Smart Displays
InstallationI was concerned because my home wiring did not include the C wire, and there is no definitive answer on whether the thermostat will work without it. You simply have to try it and see. Fortunately, it did work without the C wire in with my very basic mobile home furnace. If it did not, I would have installed it closer to the furnace where I could easily run new wiring. There are also a number of gadgets that will solve this problem, easily found on the Internet. You will want to download a smartphone app to guide you through installation. It will ask you how your existing thermostat is connected by terminal colors, and then tell you how to match them to your new thermostat. Getting it online took no special steps... the app found it and I had immediate control over the thermostat with my smartphone. It only took a few more intuitive steps to be able to control the thermostat from my computer via home.nest.com, and my Lenovo smart displays throughout my home.First Month of UseAs you get into the apps, you will find there are a variety of modes. In Learning mode, you adjust the thermostat (at the thermostat, phone app, PC or whatever you have) for the first week or so as needed. Each time you adjust it, it adds a learning point and begins to predict future settings. From then on, you don't have to do anything unless you change your life schedule. Then, you simply adjust it a few times until it learns that new schedule. There is a mode that uses a motion sensor built into the thermostat. If it does not detect motion after some period of time, it assumes nobody is home and it goes into an eco setting with more economical temp settings. This assumes the thermostat is in a central location where people are likely to walk by, not the case in my home, unfortunately, so this mode is not for me.You can manually schedule thermostat settings and modify the learned settings via the smartphone or PC app. This is a very simple graphic interface. If you have been frustrated by older thermostats where you have to press certain buttons over and over again, scroll through days, this is the interface you want. The remote sensor was a big deal to me because my thermostat is not far from the kitchen and was fooled by cooking activity. This caused the other rooms to be colder than we wanted. And it works great for that. A few notes... the calibration isn't great. I left the remote sensor right next to the thermostat for a few days and there was always a 2 degree difference. Also, if you are using smart displays, you cannot change control between the thermostat and remote sensors via that interface. You can only change via the phone app or PC. On the other hand, you can schedule the times you want to use the thermostat vs remote, so if you have a consistent schedule, it can be adapted.ValueI installed this myself and my energy provider gave me a $100 rebate on this purchase. I live in a cold climate so this is having a great impact on my energy bill. I anticipate this will pay for itself in 2 years. My old thermostat needed batteries every 2 months (often requiring the dreaded reprogramming), so that is an additional benefit. The Nest remote does require a battery every 2 years, according to literature. It's an odd size but easy to find and cheap on Amazon. My home is more comfortable and I am going to end up saving a bunch of money. I couldn't ask for more.

Awesome thermostat!
Love this new 3rd gen nest! Works great! So easy to install took me less than an hour, I'm sure more capable hands could do it in less time. Highly recommend!

I love my Nest
I love the nest easy to operate. I can set the temperature from my phone... never come home to a cold house again... with the sensor I no longer have the issue of my third floor being colder than the rest of the house

Easy to Install, Slow Set up
Didn't find the wall plate to be appealing, although when I brushed paint on the wall the sheen turned out to be slightly off, all around the thermostat took a little while to set up. The batteries were low when I got it so it wasn't able to do all of its software and connectivity updates resulting in about 45 to 50 min for complete set up.
