Acceptable
An ideal sci-fi film featuring a "sameness" cafe owner and tenants in a rundown suburb of late 19th to early 20th century buildings whom find themselves in conflict with unscrupulous developers. Whatever the film's weakness is, it's generally acceptable while considering it was made in the 1980s, the special effects are still good. Again, I won't give too much away.

old chestnut
This film is so old, but I went back to it, and I'm so glad I did!Perhaps the silliest of the Spielberg films, I mean who could possibly think of miniature space ships coming down and doing a quick mend job on a condemned building imminently due for demolition, and making the developers run for their lives. Well Spielberg could, did, and in his own inimitable style made a successof itIt has a similar feel good factor to that of ET, although it's not as in depth as that movie. The acting of the two principle stars, who are a husband and wife team anyway, is very touching. There is an undercurrent of sadness in the plot, the mental condition of the ex boxer, the poverty of those on the fringe of criminality, the future of those giving birth without the benefit of a stable partnership, and the problems of the husband and wife who together were fighting dementia, tradgedy and violence, is not occluded by the zinginess or silliness of the plot. The circumstances of these poor folk living on the edge is impossible to ignore. This is a children's film for adults, and will hopefully open all our eyes to the human condition. It is a partnership of the ridiculously funny and stark hopelessness of those with so little it makes one cry! Spielberg also treats his characters with the utmost respect, and care, There is never any patronisation. How on earth was it such a success, I think it's because we all love to think that a miracle may occurr, and I'm quite sure that sometimes it does. This has been Spielberg's theme throughout his movies, from ET to Schindler's List. He has sold us hope in huge dollops!More power to his elbow!

Very tidy little family piece.
Residents of a building under threat of demolition from developers get an answer to their prayers in the form of tiny mechanical aliens.Firmly embedded in the trench that houses a number of 80s fantastical alienish pictures, *batteries not included is a bit worn around the edges yet still keeps its head above average waters thanks to its unbreakable charm. There is something so joyous about watching bullies {here in the form of vile developers and their hoodlum enforcers} getting a dose of their own medicine, and although the outcome here is never in doubt, it's still an amiable enough ride that manages to lift the spirit and close the picture out with a big cheesy grin. Boasting the solid Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy in the leads, we are in very safe hands, and it may well say Matthew Robbins name on the directors chair, we are in no doubt that producer Stephen Spielberg has his stamp all over this one.Safe family viewing, 6/10

The dvd is probably sub- standard . Please be warned !
Absolutely awful ! Bearing in mind I love this film, imagine my disgust when half way through the sound completely broke up & the picture went into “ fits & starts “.! Surely these dvd’s are checked before accepting them ? It was a total disaster.!!

Should be more famous that it is!
As as I child me and my mother used to watch a VHS recording of this film that she had made of the television, and needless to say that that VHS tape had one hell of a battering over the years! This is one of Steven Speilbergs earlier films, and it contains beautiful story telling from beginning to end (with the help of some very good CGI for the time). This film is based on a single premise. 2 very small spaceships coming to the aid of the residents of a dilapidated tower block in New York who are being forcibly evicted by a corporation who plan to build a complex of skyscrapers on the land the tower lies on.I do not wish to provide spoilers as this film is simply a joy to watch, but I shall say that it is definitely worth a viewing, and I would recommend this film to anyone and all ages.

A treasure
I was in awe of this film when I was a child, as CGI was new then.I bought this in order to take a trip down memory lane and even after all these years I still cried.Good natured magic and a treat for kids.

Suspend reality and enjoy a feel-good movie
Friendly aliens help residents overcome unscrupulous developers. Always cheering to see the underdogs winning and this was an unusual version of that theme. Well-acted .
