NOT what they used to be!
I lost a smartwool sock somewhere and these looked like the same model, so i bought them. I am a size 7.5. The first thing i noticed is that these seem to have a LOT more synthetic in them than the previous, which must have been more wool. The old ones were nice and snug, stayed in place. Whereas, these feel saggy and baggy. Like a pair of stretched out clothes. I am SO disappointed and even madder that i misplaced that original mate sock. The old ones were fuzzy dense wool, but these feel ribbed by comparison. Friction is NOT good for hiking.

New hiking socks
I am a huge fan of wool for socks as it is breathable and durable. I bought these after an ill-fated hike with the wrong socks left me with giant blisters on my heels. These socks are very thick and I have used them with a silk liner to further reduce the chance of blisters. I ordered the women's Large and wear size 9-9.5 shoes and they fit great. The are very cushioned and my feet feel great while hiking. No more blisters!

Love these socks!
I'm a longtime Smartwool fan and these are my favorite hiking/boot socks. They're cushioned, comfortable, don't allow any kind of chafing or rubbing anywhere, and wick sweat, keeping my feet happy. They also help keep my narrow heels and ankles from sloshing around in my boots.I've been very unhappy with changes Smartwool has made to some of my other former favorite socks, so I was a little worried when I ordered these. But I breathed a sigh of relief when I opened the package -- these socks are exactly the same as they've always been: soft, thick, and well made.

Warm, run big
Love these - I have poor circulation to my toes/feet and these keep them warm. I wish they made an XS though. I'd say the size chart is off - I'm a women's 7.5 M (7 in heels, or 8 in boots/some sneakers) but the size Small socks are still a little big.

Warm and comfortable. Great quality.
I have several other pairs of these socks, and I highly recommend them. They are comfortable and fit well. My shoe size is 9B and I purchased the Medium size. They let your feet breathe and work great with several types of shoes. They come up high enough to be comfortable with hiking boots and lace up winter boots. I wash them in the washer in cool water and hang to dry. Unlike some other brands where comparing items purchased from previous seasons shows how a company has cheapened their products, these Smartwool socks are exactly the same in size and quality as those I purchased a few years back. All the various Smartwool products I have purchased are great quality and are holding up well. Glad I found this brand. Definitely worth the price if quality is what you are seeking. They are equal to our northeast Ohio winters.

Overpriced (Price Absolutely Not Justifiable)
Comfort: 4/5Breathability: 5/5Warmth: 1/5 (for wool isn't surprisingly not very warm)Value: 0/5Sizing: as described--ordering up or down a size is not necessary. These socks are soft, thick (in a airy, cushy kind of way, not dense), and quite breathable; they are comfortable to wear. Unfortunately, the socks do not keep my feet as warm as I was anticipating they would. Furthermore, after about four to five wears the socks turned very nubby. (Note: they have only been gently hand washed with mild detergent and lukewarm water to prevent from shrinking.) For nearly ten dollars a sock I expected much better quality and far greater warmth. This was my first purchase of this brand, and most likely my last as the quality of these socks are absolutely not worth the cost/price. Cannot possibly recommend. Would rate these socks two-stars but they really are comfortable--they are not as thin, stiff, and tight as Costco's bulk wool socks are, and they feel much more breathable. The wool socks I purchased from Costco several years ago are. however, more warm than the singular Smartwool pair--and Smartwool's sizing on this pair is flawless.

Fantastic socks!!
I love love these socks. Got new Keen boots and bought these socks due to recommendation at shoe store. My feet are not to hot to hike in desert and do not sweat so no blisters. I have been going five mile hikes and no problems. Feet feel great after hike. I am 73 so I need all the comfort I can get to hike. These are the best. Will be ordering more pairs of these socks

great wear several years and padded toes, heel great socks
These sock are the best they wear for about 2-3 years at least. I have bought these socks for at least 7 years, I wear them in hiking boots and also my everyday shoes for work. I do a lot of walking at work and the padded toes, heel really help. I walk my dog daily and walk 5 + miles. They are not too tight at your ankles. They are worth the price I don’t buy regular socks anymore. I wear a medium and my shoe size is between 7-7 1/2 they came quickly . I used to buy them at Dick’s but, with Covid I stay out of the stores and they don’t always carry them. I do wear them through fall and winter. 5 stars

Great socks, they don't matt under your toes when ...
Great socks, they don't matt under your toes when your feet are hot and sweaty, and are comfortable for long hikes (did 23 miles in a day, did change the socks over just because that's sensible). Bought the small, am a size 5, so just at the lower end of what they recommend for medium. Definitely not too small for a size 5 foot, and would have been really irritated with a size up - recommend actually getting a tape measure and measuring the length of your foot as that's a bit more accurate for the sizing. Quite padded and warm - these are the medium crew, and doubt that I would really need the heavy crew in hiking boots. Did get a blister across the back of the heel but suspect that was partly to do with not tying my boots up well. Have not had any blisters on sole of foot or toes.

Great for ‘mid temperature’ hiking
I bought these socks before a summer of hiking, including the Inca trail in Peru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. The hikes included both hot and cold conditions and so I didn’t want really thick socks (or overly thin ones!). These were a good compromise and probably the thickness I used the most (I did also have thinner and thicker ones for more extreme weather days). They kept my feet dry due to the moisture wicking quality and were very comfortable. I’d recommend for hiking in non-extreme weather conditions

Favourite all rounder socks
Love these socks. They are my go to for walking and bed socks. For walking they are excellent (I use cotton socks inside and have never had a blister). They’re also great for winter evenings. I have terrible circulation and these keep my feet toasty warm and stave off the chill blaines.Worth every penny.

The best hiking socks
Socks are the 2nd most important bit of kit (after your boots). After trying a number of different brands over the years, these are the only ones I wear now and I own several pairs. I recently walked the West Highland Way, 20 miles a day, and not one blister. They're not cheap but worth every penny.
