Excellent for pileated woodpeckers.
We bought this after we observed a unexpected pileated woodpecker trying to eat from our small suet plug feeder. This feeder arrived promptly. Very easy to drop in suet cakes and hang from our shepherd hook opposite the plug feeder. It was about 3 days before the pileated returned. It immediately flew to this feeder and began eating. Support was perfect for its tail feathers. The pileated is a daily repeat visitor now.

Pileateds love this
I needed a suet feeder that would be easy for pileated woodpeckers to brace their tails on. And they do. Littler woodpeckers, and nuthatches, chickadees, etc. love it too. The squirrels have nibbled on the suet inside, and so far no damage to the feeder itself.

Can't beat Kettle Moraine for Quality Birding Gear at a great price.
Love these suit feeders. More importantly, all my woodpeckers do too! Unfortunately, lately the starlings have also discovered them :-(. I have purchased plenty of birding stuff from Kettle Moraine b/c you simply can't beat the quality -- with the added bonus that their namebrand products are made in Wisconsin, USA. I plan to buy two more Kettle Moriane suet feeders, without tail prop [perhaps a regular double cake feeder like this one, and a double made to feed suet pellets] and put them in squirrel proof cages that are wide enough in diameter to prevent grackles and starlings from feeding on my suet. I don't actually have a problem with squirrels as my feeders are mounted 8' up on a 4x4 with racoon baffle, but squirrel cages can be used to deter the bully birds if they are sufficiently large in diameter. Grackles especially, with long necks and bills can reach through even small openings to raid feeders if the cage diameter is small. I'm sure I'll get many, many years of service out of these great feeders and the ones I plan purchase. Another nice feature of these recycled plastic feeders is that they are easier to clean than wood.

Sturdy and great materials
I'm happy that the wood versions of this were sold out when I was shopping for it. This recycled wood/plastic version will last forever. It's great, everything that I wanted.

two design problems
Cage tends to fold when you attempt to insert suet cakes, practically requires three hands to load cake. Cord is topped by small narrow eyelet, awkward to slide onto a large hook, I prefer a simple hanging cord without an eyelet.

I like it, My birds Love it!
The feeder is very sturdy. Even the squirrels that keep raiding it have done no damage. It is constantly being used by my Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and even the Pileated Woodpeckers in my back yard feeding station. It is well made and easy to fill. A great addition to the bird feeding area in my back woods.

Solid bird feeder
I love this feeder, one thing though, I had to glue the wire to the holder. The cage that holds the feed, slides very easy. To keep the squirrels from getting in easily,I glued the cage to the holder, problem solved.
