Naval Aces of World War 1 part 2 (Aircraft of the Aces, 104)

This volume is a companion volume to preeminent aerohistorian Jon Guttman's Naval Aces of World War 1 part 1. If you are a serious aviation enthusiast, you must acquire this volume, especially if you already own part 1! Part 2 examines the Naval aces who flew alongside or against those of the RNAS. I found this volume to be so fascinating because of the variety of floatplanes and flying boats employed and it was refreshing to read about operations along the coast of Flanders, the Adriatic and the Baltic Seas! Highlights include the careers of Friedrich Christiansen, Theodor Osterkamp, Gotthard Sachsenberg, Aleksandr de Seversky, Gottfried Banfield, and David Ingalls (the sole US Navy ace!). Once again, Harry Dempsey's color profiles are fabulous, and Mark Postlethwaite's cover artwork is amazing! You do not really need to have Part 1 to enjoy this book but I will provide a link for it in case you are a purist like I am!  Naval Aces of World War 1 Part I (Aircraft of the Aces) . Other Osprey volumes by Jon Guttman that I heartily recommend:  Pusher Aces of World War 1 (Aircraft of the Aces)  the "Pusher" aircraft were as unique in their own way as the floatplanes! and  Balloon-Busting Aces of World War 1 (Aircraft of the Aces)  the Balloon buster aces were a unique breed of pilot!

Very nice book, informative and concise. Main story line in this first volumn is aboutthe allied (RNAS/RAF) naval aces, their units and aircraft. The book also features a colorsection with aircraft profiles, with a seperate section in the back of the book that givesinformation about each aircraft profiled. This book is part of the Osprey aces seris and itis one of the best.

Well written information on mostly German aces. Data included on Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Russians. Wish there was more technical data on the aircraft, though that is an ongoing issue with this series. Format is well done as Osprey knows to do, photos are good and often unseen before. Overall a solid work on a lesser known subject.

What can I say, it is an Osprey Title which means you are going to get a well resarched and readable book which contains an awful lot of information for a relatively slim tome. This is a great accompaniment title to Vol 1 and is sitting alongside quite a number of other titles from this source on my bookshelf.

gute Darstellung eines in der Gesamtliteratur nur eingeschränkt behandelten Themas. Gute Illustrationen und anschauliche Darstellung des Themas. Dieses Buch kann als sinnvolle Ergänzung zu weiteren Abhandlungen der See-Luft-Kriegsgeschichte des ersten Weltkrieges dienen. Empfehlenswert.
