The Aeon Labs Smart Energy Switch is a low-cost Z-Wave appliance switch which can report immediate wattage energy usage or kWh energy usage over a period of time. The switch plugs into a standard power outlet, and your appliance plugs into the switch. Installation is that simple. Now you can use a Z-Wave controller to turn the appliance on/off from 100 feet away. ? Adds Z-Wave wireless control to a plug-in appliance ? Supports devices rated up to 1875W, 15A ? Built-in meter monitors energy consumption ? Wireless range up to 100 feet from controller ? Repeats Z-Wave commands to other devices In addition to Z-Wave technology, the Z-Wave Smart Energy Plug-In Appliance Switch also features an integrated energy meter to help you manage your energy consumption and reduce costs. It can report immediate wattage consumption or kWh energy usage over a period of time. Energy consumption will be displayed in the user interface of the gateway/controller (if supported). For even more energy savings, put the switch on a timer using a compatible Z-Wave timer or software (sold separately). The switch receives wireless Z-Wave commands up to 100 feet away, repeats Z-Wave commands to other devices, and supports Z-Wave Explorer Frames. It can also be controlled by other Z-Wave devices to turn on/off to save electricity when appropriate. With an unobtrusive small form factor, the Aeon Labs Smart Energy Switch will not block other nearby A/C outlets.

Well built, reliable and the cheapest zwave certified switch I have found
Love these things - they are well built, reliable and the cheapest zwave certified switch I have found.Out of the box the packaging is simple, said something about verizon so I assume they are excess stock from some deal Aeon labs did with them. Doesn't matter - its still the same device so I threw the verizon piece of paper away and it was never mentioned again. The switch itself is really well built. The device is solid to the touch, a nice non slip plastic finish, the cables are thick but soft and the two ends are heavy duty so I doubt you will ever have any problem with them.Set-up was simple. I paired mine with a VeraLite. Once i clicked add a new device on the vera dashboard, you just click the little blue button the device twice and its done! Speaking of the blue button, that illuminates if the switch is on. I'm using these on lights primarily and didn't want blue light shining about the place when the lights where off - so this is good news! These are by far the lowest cost switch i've managed to find for zwave - and not only that, they have the added energy monitor feature too. This was really the icing on the cake. When i turn things on, the Watt's it is using appears on the VeraLite dashboard near instantly. Updates to power usage appear to be near instant also. It's been fascinating plugging everything into this to see how much power is really being used. For example, I have one lamp that uses new LED bulbs and one that used old incandescent and the difference is amazing. Plug that usage into an electricity cost calculator and it really brings home where you can save money... i don't think the old lamp has been turned on since! The other cool thing I used it for was an air purifier. That was using more electricity than I thought, so using this switch and the VeraLite it now only comes on at certain hours of the day just before, and during the most activity in the house. In summary: A great zwave switch, well built, cheap, and you will likely find the electricity monitor very useful.

Dosen't need a ground and works great. Not for high wattage items.
I've got quite a few of these hooked up at my house and paired with a samsung smart things version 2 hub. Make sure you read the instructions on how to pair first! If you don't it can take a while to figure out where you went wrong. After the first one I had a fairly easy time pairing although it could take several minutes to complete. Since they've been paired though I haven't had any problems. My house is fairly small but I haven't had any range issues and being part of a mesh network they make great repeaters.BE CAREFUL WITH HIGH WATTAGE ITEMS! I had a portable oil heater hooked up to one and it worked fine for a while but then one time I left it on too long and the rubber on the male end started to melt, deform, and the prongs shifted. Had I left it plugged up longer a fire could have started. Incidentally the device itself still seems to work fine but I discarded it and bought a new one because the fire hazard wasn't worth saving a couple bucks. My other outlets though have been working fine on an array of lamps, fans, and coffee pots. They do not require a ground to work which is nice because I live in an old house and some of my outlets don't have one.

The best Z-wave smart switch (outlet) available
I absolutely love these z-wave smart energy switches. My only complaint is the size of the "smarts". I really wish the "smarts" portion were a little smaller and not as bulky on the cord. Overall though, I have been using the smart switch for several months and it has performed flawlessly. The smart switch was easily paired with my SmartThings hub and I could control it immediately. I own several other smart switches and outlets and I feel this is the best overall smart switch currently available. There are two main feature that make this better than the competition. The first feature is that it can be plugged into any outlet and there is still room to plug in anything else, including a second smart switch. Many other smart switches are so large that you can't plug in two switches (outlets). The other feature that sets it apart is the physical power button is easy to see and push. On most every other smart outlet, the power button is small and can be hard to locate.Overall a great product and I will definitely be buying more.

Works Great!
Use this with my Smart Things system. Paired with the system in seconds! Never fails to switch on or off. I use it to turn on some surveillance cameras when SmartThings sees me as away (and then turn them off when SmartThings sees me home). Works Brilliantly!

Heavy gauge wiring, very robust product.
This is probably my favorite Smartthings device so far. I only have one of these, but a couple more on order. I have an older house built in the early 60's so I don't have the third wire neutral so all of my controls has to be done with bulbs, or outside of the outlets. The Smart Energy switch was placed into my son's bedroom, hooked up to his CD player, and a string of LED Christmas lights he uses year round for a little extra comfort light going to bed. The plug for the Christmas lights is kind of tucked in behind his bookshelf, which makes this all the more attractive. I've got the lights set to go on five minutes before he normally comes upstairs to start the bed time routine. There are far too many nights where I'm all tucked into bed, and realize that I forgot to turn off his lights, or his music is still playing. I now just reach over, and turn off the plug which has an outlet strip plugged into it, shutting down his room. The other neat thing is showing the energy usage of devices plugged into it. For the four nights it has been hooked up and running thus far, the downstream devices have only pulled a total of 0.077 kWh.
