Clinically, high levels of LDL has been associated with health problems, such as cardiovascular disease. This is due to the ability of macrophages to uptake cholesterol from LDL, leading to inflammation and thickening of the arterial wall. Current cardiovascular disease therapies include decreasing LDL by treatment with statins, which decrease cholesterol.
