Teachings of "Guru Dev"
Beautifully clear discussions of the teachings of 'Guru Dev', with helpful footnotes which help the reader understand the text in places where a prior knowledge of the context of the talk would be helpful.Peace can be found even in a world of chaos.

A great source book of the teachings of a Great Soul by a great soul.
A great visit to the Source of a great teacher's teaching, by a man who in his quiet way was able to convey so much with so few words. I wish that this had been the first of many books. Grateful to include it as resource book in my library. I have bought four more for gifts. JGD.

The teachings of Maharishi's teacher
Interesting to see the enormous differences between what Guru Dev said and what Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said. I think that MMY had the better teachings, by far.

They help to understand key ideas of Guru Dev much better. It is recommended to compare the translaton in ...
There are some other translations of these very likable talks by Sri Brahmananda Saraswati, who is revered as Guru Dev (and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's gurudeva and guiding friend among meditators in theTranscendental Meditation way and others. One of the strengths of this version are the many informative notes offered by Professor Cynthia Ann Humes. They help to understand key ideas of Guru Dev much better. It is recommended to compare the translaton in this book with two other translations that exist. One is by Paul Mason, entitled "108 Discourses of Guru Dev: Life & Teachings of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath (1941-1953) Vol. I", for yogi insider thought comes out in different shapes in the different translations.Original listeners to Sri Brahmananda's talks knew the basic ideas of Vedanta. It definitely helps to know them to understand the material better. The talks are concise. Among significant topics that are mentioned are Enlightenment (moksha), meditation, karma, dealing with life, making use of it for good, obstacles on the Path, dharma (righteous dealings, etc.) and many more. Thereby it may serve as a key to Hinduism.I wouldn't be without it.

A very nice book indeed
I'm so glad that Cynthia Humes' English translation of the Hindi book of 108 discourses of Shankaracharya Swami Brahamanand Saraswati is at last available to book readers. Cynthia prepared this translation many years ago yet due to one thng and another it was put to one side. Now those interested in this teacher, sometimes known as Guru Dev, have an alternate translation to read. I understand that there have been four translations made, my own, '108 Discourses', which also includes the original Devanagari text, Cynthia Humes', the translations L B Shriver commissioned and those hard to find translations by Muni. Let's hope that in the fullness of time, all four versions will sit side-by-side on the shelves of those who prize these teachings. Jai Guru Dev
