Gaiam Night of The TWISTERS

Great Adaptaion of the Book
I remember watching Night of the Twisters when it first aired on the Family Channel back in 1996. I had read the book when I was in 5th grade, and I thought this was a very good adaptation. For a TV movie, the special effects for the tornadoes were very well done. I had wanted to purchase the VHS tape when it became available, but never got around to it. When I saw that there was a DVD for the movie, I bought it. It's really nice watching the movie without commercials.I really liked the casting choices -- especially Dan Hatch. Who wouldn't want to see Devon Sawa in his teenage years? He was a little older than I had pictured Danny being in the book, but it still worked quite well. John Schneider as Jack Hatch was another good casting move. I felt he was a little too harsh at times, but other than that it was a good portrayal.I found it interesting that this was released the same year as Twister was. If you compare the two, of course Twister is going to have the better CGI special effects, but I am not going to compare the two movies, as they are completely different from one another. If you liked the book, you'll most likely like the movie. I would recommend this to anyone who is old enough to read the book since they will know what to expect when the twisters come.

Pricey but truly worth it
I was finally able to snag this. The pricing is crazy for this but it seems to happen with really old underrated movies. I loved this when we watched it in school and now I’m able to show my kids who are obsessed with tornadoes (we live in Iowa) so this was perfect to add to our collection.

Brilliant!
Night of the Twisters is one of the best films I've ever seen. The performance from the lovely Devon Sawa (Dan Hatch) is fantastic. My dad's not really one to actually sit and watch any film all the way through, but he did with this film which made my day! It's basically about a boy called Dan and his best friend Arthur (Amos Crawley) who get trapped inside Dan's house during a horrific tornado storm, and have to get Dan's baby brother and themselves to the safety of the basement. After the twister's over, Dan and Arthur set out on a journey to find Arthur's sisters and Dan's step-father, Jack (John Schneider), grandma and mother, and try and all get to the safety of a medical centre in the town before they get hit by another twister. If you can't buy this film, then I recommend you rent it a few times, cos this is one film with indredible effects which are worth seeing!

Life lessons
I really enjoy this movie. It is very enjoyable/believable. It is based on a book of the same name. Not a copycat or temake.

Excellent entertainment
Teenager Dan Hatch and his friend Amos are babysitting Dan's baby brother, watching TV and fooling around. But a major tornado is coming their way, unbeknownst to them but knownst to us, and we just want to scream, "Get the baby and get out of there NOW!". I just love the scene where the ping pong table swirls around for a few seconds, then flies away! In fact, unlike Twister which mostly showed us the damage from the outside, Night of the Twisters makes us feel much more "inside" the tornado. And it's fun! The scenario is very well done, carefully building up to the climax: the tornado chasing car scene. And the special effects are surprisingly good, right up there with Twister! Wholly recommended to any disaster movie buff.

i've seen worse
as TV movies go,this one is pretty good.the special effects are,for themost part, well done.however, the film dwells not so much on the Twisterswhich descend on as small town, but more on the dramatic area, such ashow the relationship between father(John Schneider)and son(DewonSawa)changes throughout the course of events.it also deals with theaftermath of the destruction. We do see some twisters, but not as many asyou might hope.a lot of the movie shows destruction taking placewithout actually showing the tornadoes.the acting is a bit suspect, notso much with main characters, but with minor characters such as thenewsman reporting on the weather.not very believable,at all.there arealso some dialogue issues, such as being corny, and clichéd,or downrightridiculous.the way some of the characters(again, thankfully minorcharacters)behave during the crisis and what they say is not realisticfor the situation. However, the film is still quite watchable and not atall boring,so i give "Night of the Twisters" a strong 3/5

Brings back memories.
I believe this was originally a TV movie, so I can't really say that it was all that bad. Especially considering it was made in the 90's. By today's standards, the special effects are laughable. But at the heart of it, the story still touches the hearts of it's viewers (mostly, anyway) - myself included. At the beginning, a son and his step-father struggle to find common ground. But one nights events of life or death twisters ripping through their town, destroying anything and everything it's path, and threatening the lives of the Hatch family . . . . slowly, as the family reunites, a stronger bond is forged.I rated the movie a three for sentimental reasons, though if I had only seen it for the first time recently, I'd probably be more inclined to give it a two . . .

A Great Movie
I have had a extremely long facination with weather extremes and although this movie didn't spend millions upon millions of dollars on special effects it still gets the point across. I let my kids watch this movie and they loved that it was told from the view point of a young man. It made them understand the movie better. Anyone who's been stuck in the middle of a disaster knows it's that strength of character is what sees us all through to the end. This movie is certainly worth viewing.
