The Blue Note Label: A Discography, Revised and Expanded (Discographies)

FYI: if you buy this new you probably aren't getting the first printing (with a maroon cover), but a "digital reprint... all materials and methods used still conform to the highest book-making standards." I hope it is, but the binding is different and does not seem to be as durable; the pages are bright white (instead of the less-reflective paper with the slightest tint of parchment) and feel like photocopy paper, and the book is slightly thicker and noticeably heavier (3 lb. vs. 3 lb 6 oz). As a reference volume, it will be consulted frequently, so I do hope it holds together.One content problem with this reprint: the table of contents omits page numbers! Very annoying.The following comments refer to all volumes (first printing and reprints): one thing that limits the usability of this volume is that it isn't cross-indexed very well. The best discographies have a section of album listings by number (which this has) that is cross-indexed so that you can page back to the recording session(s) that contributed to that album (this volume leads you back to the page number where the session appears -- it would be better if it lead you to the date, IMHO).

The book is complete, with all the informations ever needed for someone looking for a specific release on the BN label.Will satisfy mostly jazz collectors, BN collectors, etc...This book is to be bought as a tool, not as a good read! It is full with discographical informations.

Die hier bestellbare Version dieses hochgelobten Mammutwerkes ist im Grunde überhaupt nicht zu gebrauchen. Weder inhaltlich noch formal.Es handelt sich sehr offensichtlich um einen billigen digitalen Nachdruck, der wie kopiert erscheint. Billiger folierter weißer Papp-Einband, Klebebindung und billiges stumpfes Kopierpapier. Die Buchstaben sind grob und unscharf gedruckt, alles wirkt, wie mit einem einfachen Bürodrucker gedruckt. Das Lesen ist extrem ermüdend.Ich kenne das Original und die innere Aufmachung und Kapitelsortierung nicht, aber hier wirkt alles völlig unübersichtlich, wie ein völlig chaotisch zusammengestellter Fließtext.Keine nachvollziehbaren Kapitel, keine Seitenzahlen (!!) und keinerlei Stichwortregister.Daher absolut unbrauchbar bei der Suche nach bestimmten Sessions oder Aufnahmen. Und das ganze zu einem saftigen Preis, der weder durch die billige Material- und Herstellungsart, noch durch den unbrauchbaren Inhalt auch nur ansatzweise gerechtfertigt wird!Mein Fazit: Finger weg!!
