Protocols Rock!
In this age of cooperative, project-based learning, and higher levels of interdependence, it is important that any meeting, professional development opportunity, conference, or organization utilize tools to help professionals "take charge of their own learning" (p. 1). Throughout the book, the authors present protocols as vehicles for transparency and collaborative learning opportunities in educational settings. They put forward the idea that "in forcing transparency, protocols teach us habits...to take the time to listen and notice...to work without rushing...to speak less (or speak up more)" (p. 7).How do educators and students develop, and teach, patterns of behavior and thinking that become habits? In many cases, teachers and students experience school as a place where thinking is valued and given time. Such environments help them to foster an inclination toward thinking, and to develop a greater awareness of thinking occasions. In utilizing protocols, the authors argue "they can accelerate the development of facilitative leadership, and thus assist in the creation of new workplaces for educators" (p.13).At the core of the book, then, the facilitator of the different protocols described throughout the book promote participation, ensure equity, and build trust. As educators, they use protocols purposefully and deliberately, and guarantee accountability to the process itself, for the sake of gaining other's perspectives and informing one's own.One of the most powerful arguments for utilizing the book, and "jumping in", is that in order to have accountable institutions of learning, for the sake of our students, we as educators must be willing to take the lead in educating ourselves. This book is the first step in such endeavor.
