An Insightful Peek Into Norse Culture Circa 900AD
Most films about the Norse of this period are about raiding and adventuring. Unlike them but like many of the sagas, The Northman is a revenge drama. The telling of the story, exposes the viewer to parts of Norse religion and lore which are almost seamlessly mixed into the way the people saw and lived their lives.Costumes and settings for this film while not perfect, are probably the most authentic yet. True to Norse history, slaves play a major role and their brutal mistreatment is never glossed-over.The revenge taken by Amleth includes the systematic destruction of everything his father's killer holds dear before the the final step of killing the man himself. It is accomplished with skill, patience and deep cruelty, normal for the location and time. The end includes an unexpected twist. This movie is authentic to history as possible, meaning there are no concessions to modern sensibilities or ideas about inclusion and decency. The story is told from the perspective of the Norse culture of that time. Life was cheap at every level. So this movie will not be for everyone.I've watched it twice now but still have not caught all the subtleties and nuances, some of which go by very fast. I'll probably watch it again to pick up more detail.

Decent movie as far as action and cinematography
Decent storyline, action, and cinematography, but does have a few scenes of unlikely scenarios and outcomes, but entertaining enough. Never heard of most of the actors, and somewhat surprised main actor (Tom Hopper)hasn’t really been in anything noteworthy, as he looked the part….actually ordered movie by mistake while looking for “The Northman” movie, but kept it anyway.

A great saga of Vikings and revenge!
I loved this movie because I have done a great deal of studying of the Vikings culture and of their lifestyles. This movie was as close to real life as I have ever read about from their history. Great job!

Incredible!
SPOILER FREE: This movie hit a lot of good hot spots. The cinematography is very well done with good rich colors and excellent lighting. I am not the biggest fan of the day for night shots, but that isn't a big deal. The sweeping camera angles of the landscape are very lord of the rings (Peter Jackson) and only a few times did the camera regrettably cut from some of the action. The good news. Great acting, great storytelling, excellent visuals, excellent action, and really cool messaging that isn't heavy handed like alot of other current productions. The soundtrack was well fitting and fit every mood that it was trying to convey and if you do an analysis, you can tell how the elements of each important scene come together like a well made cake.In some parts, just when you are worried they might go on too long with dialogue or exposition, a well timed event brings everything around for more adrenaline and edge of your seat moments. This is an excellent movie start to finish and I can't wait to get the physical copy!!!!8.5 out of 10 😃👍

Enjoyable Enough Lightweight Viking Saga
Although this was only made a few years ago now, there are modern online series such as Black Sails etc that can carry off these kind of story lines much better with much more depth and also make them look a lot better - budget films need to work much harder these days to not be compared unfavourably to series made by online streaming services. That all said, this is still a decent enough budget Viking drama. It looks pretty good most of the time for its budget - a lot better than most at this end of the scale - with some nice scenery thrown in and just about everyone puts in a fairly good performance. The storyline is simple enough to just switch off and enjoy but also enough of a story there to engage with and stay motivated to see it through to the end. It's basically Vikings Vs Scottish mercs with the Vikings as the underdogs trying to escape an island they've landed on by mistake during a storm whilst hoping to carry out some good old fashioned plundering of coastal monasteries in Britain. They have a little bit of unexpected help along the way and there are lots of will-they-wont-they make it moments as the Scotts hunt them down. The film might not be spectacular but I didn't ever get bored and found it easy to stay interested enough until the end, with the only real annoyance being Ed Srein's mouth - not sure if he'd just had some kind of dental surgery or if he thought he was giving the mercenary character he was playing some extra depth, but it didn't work for me. Otherwise, not bad!

Not bad at all, not bad at all...
I quite enjoyed this film despite a lot of negative reviews and ratings. I think we are always expecting those top-notch Hollywood movies and rarely give the others a chance. I didn't find fault with this film at all - better than lots of other films out there, way better. The only thing I had to "get my head around" is watching typical South African scenery and vegetation and telling myself they are in Scotland...although, after a while I forgot about that (other than the odd, wow, it really is beautiful here) and just watched for watching pleasure. Someone made a comment that the "romance" is under-developed...but what do you expect in those circumstances? A love story while fighting for your life?

Run of the mill action film
Not bad all round ; found it on the lengthy side but fair enough acting, lots action, perhaps overdone. Plot was shaky, and ending predictable in many ways. (Good guy beats bad guy). Tom Hopper was the lead here, and he, physically, towered over the others.A convincing Viking of his day, or so I imagined from tales at school of the fearsome Norse raiders and pillagers of our coasts. Not a movie I would rush to view again soon, but it did pass a wet winter's evening.

I enjoyed this action film
I enjoyed this action film. It's one of those where the bad guys chase the good guys, the bad guys keep catching up and have good fight scenes, then the good guys escape again. Take the film at face value and you should enjoy it. For those who like Viking films, it's amusing that Queen Isult out of the last kingdom is in this film, but only princess.

Viking Mayhem
Tremendous film, seriously exciting & really well done. Ed Skrein makes a fabulous baddie & the action is terrific. I was spellbound from the first moment, which doesn’t happen often. If you enjoyed LOTR, Vikings, GoT or The Last Kingdom then this is definitely for you.
