Very small and cheaply made
The symbols and the solution are different fonts and is very difficult to open. It's kinda cute but in no way a decent lock.

Chinese Suitcase Lock
Combo printed in block characters and lock printed in what looks like hand-printed characters. Not an exact match, and for those who don't read Chinese it will take a few minutes to figure out. Also, no indication of exactly where the combination should line up. Once you figure that out, it all works very nicely.Very pretty and works well

Tiny!
So this was TINY. In addition to that, the characters used on the lock are stylized and the combo printed on the instruction is formal print. If you can’t read Japanese, you might have trouble figuring out which character is which. And if you have bad eyesight… just don’t :D

Good for fun / parties, but not for real use
I wanted this lock for a Chinese theme party I was hosting and for that, it's great. But the lock is super touchy. If it isn't lined up absolutely perfectly, it won't open -- and you can't change the combination. So, for my uses it was great, but I would advise against actually using this as a lock.

great lock, little tough to decipher
It was difficult to decipher the code. Using a magnifying glass helped and some liberal interpretation of the symbols. The symbols are read from the pin side. Picking the ones that are obvious should leave you with just one or two to figure out. But I love the little lock. It is going to be prefect addition to our escape room puzzles.

Pretty but crazy
While these locks look amazing and are classically brass locks. Unfortunately there were NO instructions with the licks so I had no way to use them. So now I have 5 cool looking brass things that aren't going to be used as a lock. Just a decoration if I don't throw them away.

Get Familiar with It Before Locking Up
I read reviews of others before purchasing and I will warn that yes, one symbol on my lock looked nothing like the symbol on the combo sticker. Both had a straight line across the top and that was my only really telling feature. Otherwise, if you've ever seen typed Chinese characters versus written I think you'll be able to match things up pretty well, sort of like typed versus cursive, most will be about the same, but there may be one that just looks totally different. As far as the locking mechanism, the first time I tried to unlock I had the symbols matched, but I did have to wiggle it just a bit to get things lined up, and after that it's worked almost seamlessly. I chose this over some other vintage locks for a box I bought that obviously had a latch for such a lock because it was a combo lock and I would not need to keep tabs on a tiny key. But consider if you're fine with a key and not comfortable with the combo, consider another vintage lock. This one takes some patience to make sure things are lined up properly and how it looks and feels when you've got it unlocked exactly, but after that should work fantastically.

How do I open this thing?
I ordered this with the intention of making an "escape room" for my students. The only problem is that this lock system did not come with a combination or any directions to open it. Looks neat, disappointed.

Pretty ornamental lock. A little diffiucult to work.
This is a pretty ornament and suitable for what I need. I would not rely on it as a secure lock. It was difficult to get it to work since the symbols given on the package for the combination did not very closely match the symbols on the lock. Also the wheels are fairly loose on the shaft so need to be held in place while you rotate the adjacent wheels. It is not clear from the package where the symbols need to align. I had to read the Amazon reviews for advice to get the lock to open but I finally did. It will work well for a steampunk costume piece I have planned.Advice: 1. The symbols are not well matched so make your best guess as to the most similar one. One of the reviews said to think of it as bad hand writing or 2 different fonts and that did help me to match them up.2. The combination aligns at the top just under the bar.3. Hold the wheels you have already set in place while you are setting the next ones.4. Once they are lined up properly, the 2 pieces of the lock slide quite easily apart.5. I wouldn't rely on this lock for strength as it seems like it could easily be broken.

Cheap
Cheaply made and characters are not the same. I told 3 days of guessing

Cool
The "combination" letters really are quite different on the printing and the carving. Only 5 minutes I'd reading reviews to figure it out though. It's not strong but it's not supposed to be.More than useful for what I wanted it for.Think if the letters as bad handwriting or different fonts to quote a previous comment.
