Fantastic Guide for Ireland
I have been a huge fan of the Lonely Planet series. I used Lonely Planet Ireland extensively on a recent trip there. The top rated restaurants were without exception excellent. This was the case in a number of cities, including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kilkenny and Killarney. The information on tourist sites was also accurate and helpful. I visited some quite high trafficked places like the Rock of Cashel and Cliffs of Moher. Of course, Lonely Planet's strength is often aiding you to select the most useful activities when confronted with a plethora of choices. The National Archaeological a Museum in Dublin was a great gem to visit. The maps, may seem superfluous is this day of map apps, but, it is incredibly useful in planning your day. Finally, Lonely Planet has all sorts of general information, whether it is about tipping, electrical outlets, background information or more. We had a great trip thanks to the valuable guidance packed into this guidebook.

Just what you need...
While not perfect, The Lonely Planet Guide for Ireland is complete, all-encompassing, and appropriate. Whether you're looking for daily tours, plush hotels, and fine dining OR rugged hiking, hideaway pubs, and economical hostels, you'll find what you need here and everything in between. Combined with TripAdvisor Dublin app, we felt we had all the info we needed on a daily basis.Great intro to the countryGreat background and map awarenessInfo on seasonal events/festivalsGreat maps of cities, areas, and large attraction sitesCity categories broken down by regionsBeware, some opening times and availability of attractions off the beaten path are not updated (bc clearly less popular than large locations, but we loved to find these small castles, etc)Final note: Preferred this over Frommers and Rick Steves for the trip we had (10 days, rented car, off the beaten path, hostels/B&Bs)

... definitely help my fiance and I to formulate a good game plan for our trip
It definitely help my fiance and I to formulate a good game plan for our trip. It was informative and helped us to make intelligent plans and decisions. We ended up having a blast on our trip and I can honestly say this guide did help in some cases. However, I would not go as far as to say that this book is a MUST HAVE. Anyone who knows how to Google can get most of the information found in this handbook. Nevertheless, this is a good book to help find a direction of what you want to do and everything you need to know about the country. It is incredibly easy to navigate, it is not an overwhelming book, and I would recommend buying this book for its cost and overall insight.

Another great Lonely Planet Guide
I have always been pleased with Lonly Planet Guides. This one is no exception. I like the frank comments, and the specific recommendations have always been great advice. I have both the paperback and the Kindle version. The paperback is more user-friendly for finding things in future trip planning, but the Kindle is easier to carry around. I am glad I bought both as a package deal.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Just got this book 2 or 3 days ago and it is fantastic. Terrific pictures and very useful information with a pull out map in the back. Goes above and beyond with information. I was impressed (and that doesn't happen often) lol This book will be key when planning our trip to Ireland. I highly recommend it. Far surpasses the other books I've read in my attempts to get information and accurate information when preparing for our trip.

Excellent guidebook
This is not our first trip to Ireland (for that I used another well-known travel writer ). I found the Lonely Planet much more comprehensive, and it provided information in depth, about areas I have yet to visit. It's well-organized ,with many small maps and excellent illustrations. It covers many areas that other guidebooks omit in favor of the tourist hot-spots. We prefer the back roads and less-visited sights and this has been very helpful in planning for trip #5 !

Very Frustraiting
I used the kindle version and it was very frustrating. We were in Ireland and the UK for two months and often we would find our self in a small town or city and would want to get the details of that town. Because there is no straight forward index you have to use the search function. The search results give you all sorts of things that are not what you want. You have to hit on a bunch of results to find the simple section just on the town. It can take many minutes to find what you want. They need to add a simple index just like in the back of any traditional book. Also on my black and white kindle that maps were impossible to read. They worked well however on the Kindle App of my Ipad mini.

Lots of good info
The book is much thicker than the many of the other lonely Planet travel books that I have. I used the book to plan my entire trip to Ireland. There are plenty of interesting places and activities listed for each county in Ireland as well as a few great potential iternaries. I actually mixed the iternaries for my 10 day trip.

Meh ... very subjective and oddly selective
Mixed feelings about this edition of Lonely Planet. Definitely feels less comprehensive than previous editions of the Ireland guide. There are MAJOR tourist sights - especially of the historic buildings variety - which aren't even mentioned and I also feel that the where to stay and where to eat sections are becoming elitist. Do we all want top end boutique hotels and 'parlour restaurants' all the time? What about more middle of the road options? Or do we have to buy the Rough Guide for those these days.

Disappointed
Disappointed as I'd expected a more comprehensive guide, and the 'pull out map ' was of Dublin, not Ireland as I'd hoped. Maybe I'd not read the small print. We were camping and there was very little information about sites etc. in the where to stay section. We travelled with friends who had the DK Guide which was more informative about where to go and what to see.

Essential guide book
Excellent information contained in the book. Most places visited were also recommended by locals and really worth a look.Beach and walk recommendations were spot on and very helpful.Restaurants were more hit and miss. A lot depends on personal taste and luck on the day!

Nicely laid, and the print size isn't to bad
I bought this for a friend who is going to Ireland. Nicely laid, and the print size isn't to bad. I have one of these several years ago hence the buy but suspect 'some interesting details' of various place have been left out perhaps for editorial reasons??

Always Choose Lonely Planet
This is a great guide to use for any sort of travelling to Ireland, it contains masses of information about its history and culture, as well as an abundance of ideas for day trips, accommodation and meals out, covering all budgets. I would definitely recommend Lonely Planet guides above all others, they have always been fantastic and are very easy to use.
