Veep: The Complete Series [DVD] [2012] [2019]

Good, but not great
I purchased the boxed set of all 7 series of Veep. Having finished watching the first one I must say I am a little disappointed. I loved The Thick of It and I'm Alan Partridge (Armando Iannucci) and I was hoping for more classic comedy following decent reviews and recommendations. 7 series would suggest it was a huge hit, at least initially in its run. However, US humour does not travel very well across the water and the simplistic American humour often failed to hit the mark with me. There are some good lines and jokes and Julia Louis-Dreyfus's acting is very good which resulted in a score of 3/5.There are 8 episodes here and 16 audio commentaries on disc 1 and 7 episodes and 8 commentaries on the final season - the commentaries are a big let-down as it is full of giggling and self-congratulations and add very little to the understanding of the making, or filming, of the series. Twice the length of the episodes is way over the top and the goofiness pales and resulted in this viewer liking the actors, actresses and producers less than before watching them. Hope this series improves. In the other series, the show is highlighted by brilliant performances by Sally Phillips as Minna Hakkinen. She outshines all other actors and actresses in this series, and steals the scenes from Louis-Dreyfus. Hugh Laurie is also very good as Louis-Dreyfus' political rival. There are far too many extras throughout the boxed set and they add little - an audito commentary, sometimes 2 on one episode for series 1 and 7 would make one believe that they are valuable and useful. However, they are general ramblings and unfortunately add very little insight. A select one or two commentaries on the key show in each series, and the first and last, with genuine insights would have been better received. In-depth interviews with the actors and actresses would have provided this, along with how the show adapted to the rapidly changing political evnvironment in the US.Like most political comedies and like most media offerings, one can spot the politically-correct, left-wing bias in portraying rural American and anyone with centre-right views as a nutter - this is chidish, immature and blatant.Buy it if it is below £50, otherwise there are superior offerings like Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Thick of It, The Office and I'm Alan Partridge

What a great series. We laughed out loud so much, and even more when we watched it again.
