Art Book = Work of Art !
This book is the central gem in my collection of art books. It offers so many perspectives on Mitchell's panels. A Mitchell panel will have at least four full-page close-ups as well as a photo of the full panel in its museum site. Each close-up reveals marvel miniatures of color combination, brush strokes, and intricate drip placements. No other book in my collection - even the wonderful Yale catalogue of Mitchell's paintings provides such daily pleasures of right-brain meditation. The printing and editorial choices are absolute winners. Outstanding! If you enjoy art books, don't miss this one....

A must-have if you enjoy JM
Great book and welcome addition to my books on JM. Two scholarly (but not too obtuse) essays, a few small works by other artists of the period, and then her works and enlargements of those works. A couple reviews didn't care for the enlargements, but they're great - trying to figure out what she did and how she did it is part of my enjoyment of her work - and unless you have the opportunity to see works like this all the time, and stand as close as possible to them, you can't otherwise experience this phenomenon on a consistent basis, or at all. It's a manageable size and worth the cost. Highly recommended. Another title if you can purchase two JM books - "Mitchell Riopelle Nothing In Moderation" - also great. Two hundred pages, more writing, more works, but she shares the pages with Riopelle. Still, a very fine book as well.

GREAT BOOK ON A WONDERFUL ARTIST
This is an oversized volume with many two-page spreads of Joan Mitchell's work, and the effect of many of her compositions is overwhelming! A must-have for abstract art lovers - or for all art lovers, for that matter! Incidentally, if you like Joan Mitchell, you MUST get Brian Rutenberg's brilliant "A Little Long Time" - he's THE contemporary master of color and composition, and my favorite modern artist.

Good quality images
Has lots of close up detail shots of her paintings. It is really nice to see the brush strokes. Haven't starting reading yet 😜

A great visual representation of Mitchell's work...
The images that accompanied the limited amount of text told the story of how Joan Mitchell worked out large multiple canvased representations of the her thoughts and methods.

Beautiful book, too short
I love this book with its lush full color spreads of Mitchell's work. It's only drawback is that it's too short.

Must have book on over looked artist
Fantastic illustrations of her work. Great examples picked to showcase. She does not get the credit she deserves. Thanks to the author for making this change. Highly recommended and worth the wait.

too much closeups
this was rather a disappointment im afraid.the book consists mainly of closeups of her brushwork, which may be interesting for an outsider, but not for an artist or anyone interested in her great work.its really a pity because most books are out of print and available only for extreme overcharge.sorry about this. :(

Not very inspiring
It seems that a few photos were taken of paintings hanging on the gallery wall and small areas of the paintings are blown up to show detail. Unfortunately the book is bland and the quality of the hard cover felt like that of a book that should cost £12 as opposed to whatever is now being charged. Its a shame as I was looking forward to receiving it after a 2 month wait. I would return it but I cant find any other books in current print on her works, therefore I will keep it as a reference.

Very disappointing
This large format hard cover book is not worth buying. The text amounts to a handful of pages and the plates are primarily details of brush work. Not informative. Buy the superb Joan Mitchell by Sarah Roberts and Katy Siegel - a much more substantial work.
