PS3 laser lens fixed disc not spinning problem.
My PS3 drive stopped functioning. After inserting a disc, the disc would not spin. Research indicated a possible low output LASER. I disassembled the PS3 and found that the LASER was emitting, but the disc would not spin. I don't have the tools to detect a low output LASER, so I ordered a replacement LASER lens and deck from Nextec. Nextec is the OEM for the PS3 Blu-ray drive.I only needed the LASER and lens module, but ordered the full deck in case the disc spin motor was also bad.Replacement was easy once the PS3 case was disassembled. The videos on the Nextec site and youtube show details on the procedure. After replacing the lens module, the drive worked correctly. I only needed to replace the lens module and not the full deck. Apparently, the drive will not spin if the LASER is not detected. As the LASER ages, the power output must gradually be reduced. One difficulty in installing the new lens was reinstalling the drive bar; there is a screw and spring that the bar slides between. Lifting the spring and using a small screwdriver to lift the bar provided the alignment required to slide the bar into place.Note: make sure you check the PS3 model number on the case against the drive table map. There are several versions of the laser.

Broken PS3 DVD laser? You NEED this!!! Works great!
After my original PS3 appeared to have died in the middle of my niece and nephew watching the Lego movie (kids can get so distraught over things like that), I figured it was about time I sprung for an upgrade. A quick check on the web confirmed the new PS4 couldn't natively play my old PS1 and PS3 library so the PS4 was out. After some research, I found out that Sony cheaped-out on the Ultra-Slim's DVD drive; as my entertainment center has little clearance above the PS3, I needed a front load DVD. So I looked into the Slim PS3 only to find out that it had a lot of over-heating issues. The general consensus on the web was the original PS3 was still the best even if its huge and "shiny".The prices on new and used PS3's were insanely high for what I wanted to spend on a system that's older than my dog, so after a couple of Google searches, I found this little baby... well not necessarily this particular one but I read that the most common issue was a failed Lens and/or Deck inside the DVD casing. Being tech savvy I figured I'd take the risk on this ~$27 part instead of forking out hundreds for a "new" system. The installation was a fair bit tougher than I thought. You have to watch those gears when you put the casing back together or the deck riser will get stuck. Another problem was connecting the ribbon cable from the PS3 to the new deck as Sony doesn't give you much excess length, so if you have large hands/fingers, good luck. While the install took me over 2 hours to complete (most of that time trying to figure out how to get the gears properly lined up), my PS3 works like new! I'm so glad I found this relatively simple fix. I would definitely buy again or refer a friend under similar circumstances.

Poor Quality Not Built Well
The Blu Ray drive did not work. First it was unable to load disk, then it was unable to read. Taking the drive apart I found that it wasn’t even fully assembled correctly. The circled area in yellow shows that the slide bar (marked in blue) isn’t sitting in the area with the set screw (marked in red). One of the reasons it’s not positioned properly is because the tab to prevent the slide bar from moving out of position was never bent up to the locking position. You wouldn’t expect to work on a new replacement drive in order for it to function. The support from the manufacture is nonexistent. The web links they give load to blank pages and searching the web for any possible contact information is a waste of time.Amazon has processed a return for me even though there are stickers all over the drive stating that the return has to be handled by the manufacture. I still have to drop the defective drive to the UPS store but I give Amazon a lot of credit for handling the return for me.

PS3 fat can now play games on discs, but still not reading blu-ray
Easy to install (took me about 20 mins). My PS3 can now play games on discs and play dvd movies. However, it still does not read blu-ray discs, and I believe I did everything correctly. I did not plan to play blu-ray with it anyway, so it is not a big deal. I So I will keep it as long as it does not die in a month! It is just a little annoying to think about the fact that the lens deck is not 100% functional.
