Great two CD set in great sound - what more to add?
This two CD set of Berry classics and rarities is the same as the Chuck Berry: the Anthology CD set so I won't bother saying too much here except to stress than the sound is really good and the selection will satisfy most needs. I miss Deep Feeling, which was on Vol 1 of the Golden Decade double LP series (which I'm sure influenced Peter Green's Albatross as much as Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny) but that's about all.

Not as good as I expected
I have quite a lot of Chuck Berry but I fancied a compilation and was persuaded by the "Gold" title. There is a lot of classic stuff on these two CDs but some of it is disappointing, particularly the later recordings. I would have preferred tracks like 'Go Go Go' in place of the London cuts. The booklet notes are interesting but there is a missing chunk of same as they peter out mid-sentence on page #17 and a closing paragraph is on page #19. Page #18 has just a photo of Chuck. Song writing credits are stated as Chuck Berry for 'My Ding-a-Ling' but this is incorrect as this song was written by Dave Bartholomew. Apart from his clear singing the guitar playing of Chuck never fails to impress. His ability to switch from rhythm to lead so effortlessly is a skill many popular groups seem unable to master, and the call and response between voice and guitar as in tracks like ' No Particular Place To Go', is so satisfying to listen to.

The real king of Rock n roll.
Just love Chuck Berry, always thought he was miles ahead of everybody else of his era. No matter what you listen to, be it. Maybeline or My Dingaling his lyrics are pure magic. What can you say about a guy who did Roll Over Beethoven, not a lot really, but if you buy this collection. You will have every major song that Chuck ever did.

Please allow me to save you some time & research!
I researched the breath out of this Chuck Berry CD situation as of 2/12/15. It has been exhausting, and at times FRUSTRATING. Between the age of some of the reviews and that these record companies have bought each other out to the point it's hard to tell who owns what anymore.I'm not a Chuck Berry expert. I'm a 46 year old white male that had heard just enough C.B. to know I wanted to go deeper. I have a CD collection that stands at 2500 and it's growing. I love just about any kind of music and seriously, that's an understatement. I'm fascinated by it's history and have recently been discovering and rediscovering lots of old Blues, Jazz and Rock n Roll.I have a modest sound system that currently consists of a Yamaha RX-V377, Yamaha CDP-S300, Energy RC-Micro 5.1 speakers, & Sennheiser HD598 headphones. So when I speak of sound quality, that's where I'm coming from. Not high end stuff, but a good enough system that it will expose the quality of the CD and it doesn't take long to hear what level of SQ your working with. When some people rave/complain about the SQ of an album, I don't know if they have apple earbuds or a $10,000 headphone amp/DAC with $1500 headphones, or their alarm clock. It does matter. I'll come back to the SQ.With all due respect, I also don't want people deciding for me what tracks are important or not. I'm an album guy. I come from records, and still have records as well. My point is, I like to listen to an entire album the way it was recorded and the artist intended. It's just my thing. I understand there are lots of folks, especially younger folks that like to purchase a mp3, download it to their device and that may be all they have. They enjoy "songs" not "albums" as I do and that's cool, I'm too old to change. So I say all this because I'm not a big "compilation" or "greatest hits" guy. They often have poor flow and compromised sound quality, edited songs, etc. on the flip side of that, I can see buying a greatest hits at a low price in the right situation and then decide if you wanna go deeper. IMHO if an artist is worth listening to, they are worth listening to right. That sounds terrible I know. I'm not a confrontational person but I have a strong opinion on this topic. It's just that music albums, and I'll keep this to CDs for our purposes here, are at a point where this is a BIGTIME buyers market. Prices of used CDs are slowly coming back up but there are many deals to be had in both new and used music right now. Many right here on Amazon and the Amazon Market Place. It's a fantastic time to be a music collector (vinyl prices aside).A few reviews have said you don't need the song "my ding-a-ling". Are you serious? C'mon man!!!!! I respect your opinion but here's mine. Best song on the album and I would not have bought a Chuck Berry compilation without it. Not because it's a work of art (it is), but because it's special to me.My first exposure to the Chuckster was when I was very young, maybe 7? My mom worked at an Ekerds Drug Store that sold a few records. She brought me home a K-Tel Funky Favorites record. It featured a bunch or whacky songs from various years. For whatever reason, I couldn't stop playing My Ding-A-Ling. As a 7 year old kid, I just thought I had discovered the holy grail of inappropriate songs for children. But in a more wholesome way. Not like I found a Redd Foxx record or something... But I had many enjoyable day and night playing that stupid record and Chucks tune was the highlight. And of course had been exposed to a few of the other hits of his like anyone who doesn't live in a cave.So that's enough about me and my thoughts. Here's the deal with the C.B. situation. It's screwed up majorly. It's CONFUSING! I usually make my selection based on what sense I can make out of Amazon's description and the customer reviews. In this order:1) sound quality2) track selection3) the number of tracks4) and finally, the price. Many people will lead you to believe THE CHESS BOX is the way to go if you have the coin. Well, I'm not convinced in the sound quality aspect of going that route. Amazons description says nothing about being remastered. Not that I can see? And a year of 1988 on it's release which may or may not be correct. As far as track selection and the number of songs (70+) it's a no brainier IF you have $30+ for it and it has as good of SQ as the newer comps. I really wish I knew and will update if I find out.As far as the next level... The comps that have multiple discs and or 30-50 songs and bare in mind at least 2 of these are exactly the same discs in different packaging under other names. The day that I worked out the math and reviews on all of them, the far and away obvious choice was Chuck Berry Gold. At $7.99 you get 50 songs on 2 REMASTERED CDs and a nice 27 page booklet. If for some other reason you want only one disc. I'd say currently the "definative" comp that's around $8 will be the ticket, but for the same price or higher, why you would want 20 less songs is beyond me. Unless they are better quality. Are they? I kinda doubt it. Again, if I find out I will update. From what I've read, the Gold is on par with the best sounding Chuck comps. There are a few reviews that say otherwise, but if you look closely, they predate the current remastered version of the CD.This Gold is an incredible deal. As said, 50 remastered tracks on 2 CDs and yes I'm fully aware that many times "remastered" CDs are only a remarketing gimmick and in many cases the CDs are actually dynamically brickwalled a.k.a the "loudness wars" saga. However, I'm hearing that all the original Chuck Berry CDs had pretty terrible harsh sound and distortion and I'm about to give you my opinion on this Gold CDs SQ NOW!It sounds OKAY. I'm not gonna hype it up. I'm really not qualified to judge it and I doubt many others here are either. It's acceptable to me. I mean it does not sound like the Telarc CDs which are an audiophile recording. It's not SACD, bluray audio, it's just a CD. In fact, it's a CD of some VERY old analog master tapes transferred to digital and it's far from perfect. These aren't CDs to listen to with high end equipment and try to find every little flaw. These CDs are for Chuck Berry fans and lovers of great music of historical importance in general. You can rock out with it. It's enjoyable enough. It's a little harsh at times on my equipment and my sensitive ears. I listened to this at a level a little lower than I normally would because of it. The music was so great that I would gladly shell out $30 for a better sounding version of the same songs but I have a feeling that any difference between SQ of this remastered set and others like it will be minimal at best. There's only so much they can do with it. It's old. It's not gonna sound like music recorded today with modern technology, it's just not. So when I hear about people raving about the sound quality of these Chuck Berry CDs it leads me to believe one or more of the following:1.) They are listening on subpar equipment.-and/or2.) They had original non remastered CDs that sounded worse before buying the newer sets.-and/or3.) They are over-zealous Chuck fans with wishful thinking wanting to share their happiness of Chucks music with others.PLEASE!!! If anyone has decent enough equipment and this Gold compilation (remastered version) and can tell me without a shadow of a doubt that they have another Chuck Berry compilation of ANY size that sounds noticeably better than this one, please let the Amazon community know. The bottom line it's an incredible deal. $7.99 for 50 of Chuck Berry's best songs on 2 CDs. Coming in at 69 and 64 minutes for a total of 2 HRs 13 minutes of probably the funnest music you will ever listen to. This isn't about SQ. I think it's beyond adequate. It's pretty good actually. I think it's very inconsistent with some songs sounding way better than others and that's not unusual with compilation CDs at all. One Reason I don't care for them in general. I have no regrets. I don't think you can beat this deal for Chucks best music at a low price for what is sadly, probably the best quality for his music in CD form at any price, anywhere. As much as I talked about the SQ because it's what matters to me a great deal, and I almost always find the reviews of it here are insufficient in any detail, but don't let that stop you because until I find better, I consider this top quality and I may not pursue it further. I find his music enjoyable enough that I think in respect for it and him, I'll buy the best available. Chances are this is it, and for 99% of folks it will be FINE. It's one heck of a deal on some MUST HAVE music.Did I really just type all this on my iphone? Yikes!UPDATE 2-13-15:If you purchase this set, and I suggest you do, you may find yourself WANTING MORE because it's so fantastic. It looks like the next logical step would be a set Amazon sells under "5 Classic Albums- Chuck Berry". This contains roughly 4CDs even though it has a lot of the same songs, it has 42 songs that "GOLD" does not have. I cannot comment on the Sound quality of that set yet, but reviews have been overall favorable. And the best part, it's around $10-$11.I will order one and update this review asap. For me personally, I would hope to separate the 42 tracks I don't have in "Gold" on my computer, make a playlist, and burn a couple CDs that would be essentially a disc 3 & 4 for my "Gold" set. In the end I would have $18 in everything I bought for a total of 92 tracks of C.B.I can't speak to how essential these other 42 songs are, but it does contain the 2 Christmas songs that would have been desirable on Gold originally.
