The best of all the D-list seasons
Having seen every episode of "My Life on the D-List" from every season, I can honestly say that Season One stands out as being the most authentic example of a true reality show. Despite Kathy's protestations of D-List status, it took little time before she started using Hollywood's interest in her show to trade up in terms of the calibre of star she was able to associate with. Now of course she's pals with Cher! (no wonder so many gay men in their 50s envy her!) But here in Season One, there's little trace of that kind of big time sucking up to the big stars. The toys for tots charity benefit that Kathy organises is a case in point, where the sheer desperation not to be abandoned by the few celebrity connections she has comes through and in its rawness tells us something authentic about the industry. In the subsequent seasons, although perhaps not as scripted as some reality programs, there is far too much "setting up" of certain situations designed to reach a comic pay off of sorts: Kathy's Mexican school, the visit to Alaska, the visit to buy a mansion in Florida, the trip to London, the trip to Sydney. The other thing in the subsequent seasons is that Kathy's learnt to mostly hide her real emotions (except when expressing grief over the death of her father, and her divorce). The most telling and insightful sequence in Season One, even though we don't see the actual exchange, is Kathy's reaction to a sexist insult she suffers from Jay Leno. The price of the DVD is worth it for that alone.Last weekend I got to see Kathy live here in Melbourne in what seemed to be a sold out show. She seemed to me to be on automatic pilot. Having seen so much of her material on TV it didn't surprise me that I'd heard so many of the jokes before - that is par for the course with stand up comedy. But I was disheartened by how remote she seemed to be, and by how heartless she was in terms of certain jokes aimed at the deaf community and Asians. This DVD however, reminds me of what made Kathy Griffin stand out as a unique talent eight years ago.

Fascinating, funny, revealing
I'd seen Kathy Griffin live at a local theatre, and also enjoyed her on "Suddenly Susan" and particularly when she co-hosted a New Year's Eve show this past December 31 with Anderson Cooper, not to mention her many appearances on TV over the years. She always makes me laugh, and that's the main reason I wanted to catch up on "D-List," as I don't have cable and the DVD was on sale for a remarkably low price. I'm not sure it's best to watch too many episodes in a row, as I did when I first got the DVD (four episodes in a row, for example, on my first viewing), as Kathy is one intense woman--at least as portrayed here. That's not a bad thing overall, as her intensity is part of the reason she can be so overwhelmingly funny, but I would suggest taking a break between episodes. It's fascinating to watch her hang with her parents, "her gays," as she calls two of her best male friends, her assistant, and her husband as she navigates the clearly treacherous waters of life in Hollywood. Never has it been both so glamourous and so depressing--it should be viewed by anyone wanting to break into that lifestyle, for cautionary purposes! But, in the end, the viewer gets the feeling you could survive--and laugh--through most of it if one of your friends in Hollywood happened to be Kathy. I recommend this DVD if you're a fan of Kathy's or if you're fascinated by behind-the-scenes Hollywood...or if you just like to laugh!

i love kathy griffin! :)
well i have to just say, that kathy griffin is the funniest woman i have ever seen lol.i was very happy with my purchase from suzysells for kathy's D-List Show. i wish i had known BEFORE i purchased just one season that, when you buy two seasons of a series on DVD, that they will upgrade your shipment to expedited. i wish they had made that bolder/more noticeable, because i would have definitely ordered season 2, too!if this review wasn't for something for kathy griffin, i would probably give 3 stars. but... i love kathy, so i am happy either way!the d-list show is very funny, easy to watch & laugh at. you don't HAVE to be gay to appreciate her. it's just.. us gay people DO love her, but it doesn't mean you MUST be. for it being the first season, she has a great lineup of celebrity guests on her show (different every week). these first two seasons are the best because they had kathy's sweet, loving & hilarious father in it. her mother is a real hoot too. i love maggie.anyways, if you think making fun of pop culture is funny (...which it is...) than you will love it. but if you are a conservative & a bigot, you will not enjoy kathy's sense of humor what so ever.James.Toxic.Prince.All Hail Our Queen

Love Kathy Griffin - She's Hilarious!
I've been watching everything Kathy Griffin does since seeing the first episode of My Life on The D-List. She's absolutely hilarious, and you can't be a sharp comedian, and as successful as she is, without also being intelligent. I bought this DVD, and will buy more because they make me laugh, and I need it during this stay at home time. She didn't deserve what happened to her after posting that photo of the head...Love you Kathy!

Unbelievably hilarious special inside, and the series is very interesting and funny
If you like Kathy Griffin, then you will love this dvd set. There are 6 episodes of her reality show, which is very interesting, she does live an interesting and eventful life, especially when she's on the road, she definitely makes it interesting, and what's even better, there are clips here and there of her appearances and stand-up acts. So when you watch the special included on the second disc, "Kathy Griffin is... Not Nicole Kidman" well.....I never laughed so much, it was LOL non-stop and I got a sore throat afterwards, because it was so funny. Of course it's full of f*** words and the lot but she is even funnier than Ellen. I know she makes fun of celebrities, but we can afford the luxury of watching from our homes and not feel insulted by it. So if you can do that, you will have a roll. After watching the special I am ordering the Allegedly dvd rightaway, I hope there will be more shows of her put on dvd and hope for the subsequent releases of her reality show, seeing as those even won Emmys.

Absolutely Hilarious!
As a longtime Griffin fan it has been very frustrating that "My Life on the D-List" has never been broadcast in Canada, but we finally get the first taste of it now and it is very tasty indeed. I love all the behind-the-scenes stuff about her career, particularly all the work that goes into the preparation for her appearances. The only minor complaint is that all the material on this 2-DVD set is bleeped. Anyone who has watched Kathy's first DVD release, "Allegedly," knows she has a flair for swearing, so it's too bad that Universal decided we couldn't handle it. On the plus side, one of her public performances is included and it is jaw-droppingly hilarious. I hope the sales of the first season are good enough to get the future seasons released.
