I had previously written a review expressing some disappointment in this pedal after only trying it on an old solid state Peavey Bandit 112 teal stipe. After using this on my 15 watt tube Monoprice Laney clone I have to revise that assessment. This pedal is BAD, in a good way. Using it with the tube amp's natural breakup this pedal can create come awesome 80's metal tones in the vane of Metallica or Megadeth. It doesn't seem like it'd be the best choice for more modern distortion, you might want a Wampler Triple Wreck for that, but for that classic metal sound this thing is awesome. I think the amp your using it with will make a very big difference in the tones you'll achieve but since my 15 watt tube amp has a lot of dirt and breakup you can dial the pedal in to supplement it perfectly. I haven't used pedals in a long time so I'm not sure what is considered noisy or not, the pedal does seem to have some noisy to it but a noise gate will take care of that no problem. It's probably no noisier then any other gain peddle, I just haven't used peddles in so long I really wouldn't know. It's a great pedal overall and for the price, forgetaboutit! I'm happy with the purchase and haven't had any micro phonic issues as some have sited.

Good for specific sounds
I like this pedal, I've only used it with my telecaster so far (I have a Little '59 humbucker in the bridge). I think the best thing about this pedal is you can set it up to cut right through the mix on stage. It can easily enhance a lot of high and mid range frequencies. You can also scoop your mids, which I was looking to do for several songs like the opening chord progression of Crooked Teeth. So the best uses in my opinion are for cutting through the mix with a lead solo, and very precise tone shaping of a mid-high gain signal. Leave it off then punch it for that solo, or shape your tone in a way that so many distortion pedals aren't very good at.The reason for four stars and not five is that it does add some noise to your signal (though that is not really noticeable because this pedal should be used at mid and loud volumes); also the gain control is from a lot of gain (at the 0 level), to ridiculous gain -- there is no way to have subtle broken up type sound. But I did use this for a short lead riff at church recently so it's not like all you get is metal. It sounds good for Zeppelin, Queen, DCFC, and more.

I rarely give 5-star reviews, but this is the SINGLE BEST distortion pedal I have ever owned!
It crunches, it boosts (especially when one uses an 18-V supply) but what it does best is add distortion that is so tubelike I honestly don't think it will ever come off my board. Also, it was $30! Trust me on this; BUY THIS PEDAL! The MOSFET gain stage perfectly blends with the tubes in your preamp you could turn a Fender Twin into a crunched stack. I even used it in front of a Twin Rect as a boost and let out my inner Corpsegrinder, and I don't think I've ever heard something so brutal- turn the treble knob up to max and it sounds similar to an HM-2 without all the fuzz an HM-2 brings to the plate.*EDIT AFTER FIVE MONTHS* The pedal still sounds amazing, but the cheap footswitch broke. I replaced it in ten minutes with a soft switch I got from Mammoth and it sounds just as good as before, just with a much better footswitch. Im good with a soldering iron, so it wasn't an issue for me, but for some kid who's just starting out, that breakage would have been fatal to the pedal.I mainly use this pedal for "blending" it with an amp at moderate gain. We've all used a distortion pedal on a clean channel as a standalone unit, and we've all boosted a dirty amp with an overdrive, but blending is when one takes a moderately crunchy amp and put a moderately crunchy pedal (running at nearly unity volume) in front of it to get metal distortion. It's full like amp distortion but controlled like pedal distortion. It works so well I will never get rid of it, ever.

Just get it...
I’m almost in disbelief of how good this pedal actually is. Don’t be fooled by the price—it’s really a great addition to my rig. I am mainly using it as a boost/OD into my (distorted) amp.I picked up a DS1 a little while back to mod in the hope that I would be able to get a saturated quasi-fuzz lead tone with it stacked on top of my amps crunch tone. The DS1 just sounds too nasty, too bassy and not loud enough to be usefull for me. I read a couple reviews for the gunslinger and decided to give it a shot and have been really impressed with its range of tones and utility. The drive control has a huge effect on the eq of the distortion and the bass/treble controls allow you to dial in the right high and low end based on where the drive is set. With the drive all the way down it can get an almost TS type tone. All the way up it can stay pretty crisp if you want or can get fuzzy if you turn up the bass. I keep finding useful settings. It does what I wanted the ds1 to do—almost fuzz (with the bass cranked), lots of sustain and makes playing effortless for that Vai/Satriani vibe. Sounds great on it’s own into a clean amp as well. It’s definitely a keeper.

Great distortion pedal. Finally...
I've been through a ton of pedals trying to find one that i would feel comfortable using on stage if my regular amp blows up. My regular amp is a JCM800 and I play classic style metal. I have a home made Supro Thunderbolt clone for a backup amp. Its loud as heck but really isn't going to cut it for my style. I've been through about 10 pedals, including expensive boutique pedals and lots of big name cork sniffer type things. None of them came even close to what I need, this one does for sure. I'd bring it on stage tonight. What I know is that I play rhythm guitar in a really loud band with another guitarist, a bassist and a drummer, and all the little subtle dynamics and fiddly nonsense you might hear in your den in a $500 pedal will vanish in my live setting. This won't, it'll cut right through and the tone is right. Don't buy this pedal if you want subtle.

Somptueux

So many sweet spots on my distortion pedal...I can't believe!
This pedal is one of the best dirt box. It can go from slight overdriven to soaring distortion and sweet spots everywhere. Reason for this is the high and low controls for eq. I use fender blues deluxe amp on clean channel (bright off) and this pedal alone makes the amp go heavy metal. If the lows are cut and high is dialled full, I get the fuzz which is unique. I stack it after drive pedal so using both I get quite a distortion.
