Not ideal for 4-5yos
Having read and owned multiple Mac Barnett books, this one was a bit of a disappointment. It’s a gorgeously illustrated story, but I found the father’s responses to the child to be glib and borderline disrespectful.Since my own children (4yos) are just beginning to ask questions like the child in the book, I felt uncomfortable reading this to them and having them think that the dad’s “answers” may be true. It could be a nice book for older kids who could laugh at the silliness of the answers, but I wouldn’t recommended it for most 4-5yos.

Beautifully illustrated, story way off
I really wanted to like this book as the illustrations were beautiful. However, the girl in the book wanted to ask many questions of her father, who appeared to be annoyed and also made up stories to respond to her inquiries. I would be concerned if a toddler actually believed some of the responses the father in the story gave to the little girl. I get that playing pretend is fun at this age, but some children may take the responses literally and not get the meaning behind what the author is trying to convey. I returned it, it's expensive and I don't think we'll read it again.

Talks more to parents than kids
We love Mac Barnett's books and his irreverence but this felt more like a wink to exasperated and exhausted parents than an engagement of the curiosity of kids. We got it for our son's 5th birthday and he had no interest in reading it more than once. A disappointment.

A good bed time book
I read about this book in the NYT and thought it sounded good. It got great reviews! When I first read it I was under impressed! But I read it to my granddaughter and she loves it! I have grown to love it too! It's a really good book!

will have you running to look up the real answers to these age old questions !
This book is childlike satire at its best of the traditional bedtime avoidance rituals. Just before the lights can out, the fathomless quesions about life commencnse. Isabelle Arsenaults beautifully illustratoes each of the dad’s creative responses with gouche, pencil & watercolor illustrated 2-page spread of dream-scapes including flying fish, dinosaurs floating in space and mice blowing bubbles, all done with gorgeous muted tones that lend to the feel of nighttime and the slowly closing eyes of the sleepy child. This is a really cute bedtime book that will have you running to look up the real answers to these age old questions because curious minds will want to know! I highly recommend it! The expressions of the dog are priceless

Beautiful book
I fell in love with this book after the first few pages. The sweet, calm fashion of this book had soon expanded and now, I was feeling the same way. The situation was all too familiar for me and if only I could turn back time, it could have been me in that room, answering those questions.Everything in this book made it perfect for me. The way the book was laid out, its illustrations, and its text; everything had its proper place and time.As I watched the adult male in the illustrations, I liked how his movements changed from one illustration to the next. I think his movements added a great deal to the book. There are other small changes that were taking place in this bedroom scene, changes that were very important, changes that our eyes noticed automatically. The questions that the young child asked, reminded me of ones that my own children would inquire about when they were younger. The constant questioning, the layer-upon-layer of mindful thinking. When would they stop? The answers came back in a creative response. The adult even linked some of his responses together. With fantastic illustrations in mixed-media tones, the illustrations complement the tone of the text, and they make you stop and take notice of them.A brilliant and sweet book, a book that I cannot get enough of. It’s definitely a book that you’ll want to share.

Book is a bit dark
I purchased this for my 4 year old granddaughter as she is at the "why" stage ... I had heard that this book got great reviews ... I am returning it today as I looked at it and find it a bit dark, birds that cry, leaves on fire (she is living in Fort McMurray and they lost their home to the wild fire when she was 4 months old), scary dinosaurs whose mouths are black holes.... so I don't think this will be appropriate for her. The illustrations are beautiful and may be better for older kids .. imo
