Another Kyoto

Not what I expected, in a good way.
I was expecting a book similar to Lost Japan, delving into the stories of Kerr's time spent in Kyoto and his observations, but Another Kyoto is more a collection of oral essays about the hidden features of Kyoto that most travelers (and residents) would likely miss. Lessons in art history, architecture and Japanese history reveal another side of Kyoto hidden in plain sight and give you a much more nuanced look at Kyoto beyond the geishas and Kiyomizu-Dera. Highly recommended, especially if you've been to the city or are planning on going soon.

Go beyond what the tour guides tell you
If you’re a fan of Kyoto and can’t wait to go back again, you’ll definitely enjoy this book. It’s a guide to different ways of looking at temples and understanding the meaning behind the decor, architecture, and layout. Also a neat introduction to East Asian art history and how Buddhism and Shinto philosophy influenced Japanese aesthetics that we know and love today. The book is light-hearted enough and the chapters short enough to be easy to read. Recommend to seasoned visitors to Japan and first timers alike!

A Kyoto Guidebook Unlike Any Other
Another Kyoto is a refreshingly different analysis of Japanese art, architecture, gardens, and culture. We will carry this book with us for reference on our next visit to Kyoto. We especially appreciated the author's take on the relationship between the architecture and gardens of Japan, China and Korea. We have visited Japan dozens of times, but this book makes us want to experience it all again.

Easy to read and educational
Took it to my July 4th weekend getaway. Easy to read. I am almost done with it. It is full of knowledge and great insight. Probably changed the way, how, and where I will look next time I visit Japan.

A friendly guide to Japanese aesthetics.
This is the book I have been waiting for--a friendly insiders view of Japanese aesthetics found in the streets, homes, temples and shrines of Kyoto. More in depth than any guidebook I have ever read, it makes me wish I had Kerr as a private tour guide on my next trip. I will never look at Japanese gardens the same way again.

Lots of things not usually covered
Really does cover another Kyoto. Good for the beginner and "old timer" as well.

Informative, Entertaining and Different Perspective
A fascinating dialogue - almost meditation - on different aspects and attributes of Japanese art, architecture, culture and custom. While focused on Kyoto, the knowledge imparted has wider application - certainly across Japan. Read this to get a sense of the historical depth, to have more information and a sense of culture beyond what you would find in almost any other book ... but also just to gain insight, learn something new and enjoy a lesson well presented.

Cracking!
A very calming read; informative, well-researched, and well-written. Explores the links between Japanese architecture and its links to other nearby countries, and many other things too. Thoroughly recommend!

Truly insightful
This book, with its beautiful illustrations and attention to detail, was an excellent book to accompany us on our visit to Japan. Not in a “here’s where you need to go” way, but in a “lean in and see this” kind of way. If you are a “checklist tourist” this may not be the book for you; if, however, you are a “curious traveler” who wants to understand what you’re seeing, this is an excellent, if eccentric companion. Read this book and you will never look at a wall in the same way again.Thisbook really enhanced our experience and appreciation of Kyoto and Japan. If you’re on the fence, I say, “Yes, buy it!”

Something about the layout of temple sites in general.
I already had a book on Kyoto, wtith which I was disappointed. Another Kyoto allowed you to better get a picture of Kyoto because there are excellent illustrations which are a big improvement on the author!s first book on Kyoto. The reader can wander around the various parts of the temple sites.kcellentkuyuip
