you need this nostalgic movie!
this was a movie i watched as a child before realizing that it was based on the book from the mixed up files of mrs. basil e. frankweiler. so i then read the book . when i grew up to become a teacher, i read the book to my fifth, sixth, and now third graders. this year i purchased this great movie starring the incomparable ingrid bergman to share with my third graders. i worried that it was above their levels, but was proved wrong. so i just had to share the movie with them. although made in 1972, and therefore dated, they LOVED it just like i did at their ages. it was nostalgic for me to watch it again after so many years, and it was also gratifying to see my students enjoying it so much! before you judge me too much for my ee cummingsish review please know that i am in a hurry and using my new ipad! in short, get the movie and watch with the eyes of a child and more importantly ...... read the book!!!

A movie from a more gentle age
A young brother and sister run away and hide out in the New York Metropolitan Museum, in this charming movie released in 1973. The brother and sister end up trying to solve the mystery of a statue supposedly carved by Michelangelo. The acting by the two young performers is natural and feels genuine. There's also a humorous cameo by Madeline Kahn - a nice plus for the adult viewers. There's nothing too complicated here, just a nice family movie wonderfully free of giant explosions, robots and noisy cartoon characters.

Loved the movie as a kid and still love it today
I saw this movie as a 10 year old in 1985. I loved it and then read the book the next week. I was worried about watching the movie 30 years later thinking that it would not hold up to my childhood memory but I still loved it.

Disappointed
My class had just finished a literature study of The Mixed Up Files of Mrs.Basil E. Frankweiler. As a capstone (at the end of the year) we watched the movie. My students LOVED the book, but were bored (as I was as well) with the movie. We did not even finish it. The acting was mediocre at best, and Ingrid Bergman was not believable as Mrs. Frankweiler. The two children, Claudia and James, did not have the unique rapport that they did in the book.On the up side, The Hideaways is a useful tool for a compare/contrast focused lesson. It was fairly close to the book in story line, but had some definite differences as well.I will be doing literature studies on this book in the future, as it is fabulous, but will not be including the movie!

We read the book as a class and were able to compare and contrast the film! So thankful to find this!

I wish I would have known about this movie before I retired - I would love to have used it to engage my kids in ...
As a teacher I would read the book "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler " to my students. This movie follows the plot in the book very closely and stays true to the characters of Claudia and Jamie. I wish I would have known about this movie before I retired - I would love to have used it to engage my kids in comparisons and critiques. Meanwhile I have sent it to my 12-year old granddaughter and await her feedback as a "modern" kid.

The quality of the film is very good though for a rare film
This is not an original disc and box, but a printed sleeve and a re-writable disc the film has been burnt to. The quality of the film is very good though for a rare film.
