Potter's Book Of Glaze Recipes

Chemical Toxicity Information is outdated.
This books has a lot of recipes and very useful information for potter. The only downside is that the recipes don't have a lot of comments other than maybe the appearance and general observations. The thing that I really wish the recipes would discuss is the toxicity of the materials. For example, a midnight blue glaze recipe calls for 28% Barium Carbonate. Barium Carbonate is highly toxic in its powder form and if it's not encapsulated properly in the recipe with other encapsulating materials, there could be an imbalance in BaO that could leach into food for foodware. It's much safer to use Ferro Frit to source barium. Therefore, I think this book is not really appropriate for somebody who doesn't know about the glaze chemistry or the materials too well. This book is a good reference once you have some more knowledge and understanding of why you would pick the materials and how you would use them.I think this book is dated from 1980 when people didn't have a lot of awareness regarding chemical toxicity and how you can get cancer due to the exposure to heavy metals. Lead was just discovered to be toxic even though it's a favorite flux to use in pottery for a long time. It's kind of astounding to read the glaze safety section and the lead frits are still recommended for use. Not sure how many people would buy your pottery if you mention that it contains lead these days.

A great book for serious ceramicists!
This book is a great reference for those who are interested in mixing their own oxides for making custom glazes. Why spend a ridiculous amount of money for pre-made when you can mix up something better? This book is packed with recipes for a wide range of firing temperatures.

Pottery glaze recipes
This book is so informative with regard to making glazes to apply to your pottery before firing. There are formulas for low fire, mid firing and high firing. Many of the formulas have pictures depicting what your results should be. But as all potters know - you should still make those test tiles!

Review from an experienced potter
I am thrilled with this new book I recently purchased, I have had Emmanual Cooper's other books on glazing and recipes - and found them most informative and the glazes pretty true to explanationI also have found that they are quite stable - we fire in the higher 1260.C upwards catagory and the sometimes glaze recipes unless worked out correctly can be very unstable and uninteresting. All in all a very worthwhile book and easy to use, a definate "MUST HAVE" for your collection

Very poor layout with tiny pictures on unsuitable papers
Very disappointed with the layout of the book. With tonnes of white spaces around pages (no doubt, necessary for a good layout/design) the images of sample glazes are tiny and very poorly printed on poor quality papers. Can't believe quality publisher can totally overlook such a crucial factor in book design.

Excellent
I love this book, although I have to say following these recipes does not necessarily lead to the expected results! But that's pottery!
