Working class heroes save the day
No magical super heroes here, just working class railroad guys who risk their lives to stop a runaway train carrying flammable, toxic fuel that's headed for a dangerous elevated track in a Pennsylvania town. The train is number 777, going 75 mph with no engineer. The train is sure to derail, and hundreds will be killed.Director Tony Scott is known for action and disaster films that have lots of breathtaking special effects but often leave something to be desired in terms of character development and story. No so here. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine play an engineer and conductor respectively, Denzel being a 28 year railroad veteran and Pine being a new young guy with only four months of experience. They're both family men. We get to know them well. We care about them, and that's what fuels the suspense.Trains are big, powerful and scary, and we get plenty of scenes of 777 barrelling through railroad crossings and crashing into all kinds of stuff (including a horse trailer. Thankfully, the horses got out in the nick of time). And Scott uses real trains, not fakey CGI. All very thrilling, but it's the characters and the story that keep us interested.Washington has been in some films that weren't so great. But has he ever turned in a bad performance? Nope. He's one of the most reliable, dedicated actors of our time. He takes his work seriously. Chris Pine is equally convincing. You can't possibly watch this film without remembering the classic 1986 film _Runaway Train_ written by the legendary director Akira Kurosawa. _Unstoppable_ has one scene at the end that pays tribute to that fim, when Washington is standing atop of a railroad car with both arms upraised in victory, exactly as Jon Voight did at the end of _Runaway Train_._Runaway Train_ had a message about an escaped convict doing the honorable thing. In this film, working class people do the honorable thing. The corporate railroad executives are portrayed as unconscionable jerks. They call a meeting as the potential disaster is going on, and the main topic is how much their stock will be devalued if there is a crash and "collateral damage."This is one of the best films of 2010, not just because of the amazing scenes, but because it's about real everyday people saving lives, not for heroism or accolades, but because it's the right thing to do. Inspiring. And no big spoiler: The ending is triumphant.

Great action movie
I love action movies, but with my young son I don't like watching movies with lots of gratuitous violence. THIS is that movie. Great action, great acting, and no violence (gratuitous or otherwise). Highly recommended.

Crazy eights
Contains spoilers in a sense. At first I found this story 'inspired by true events' to be fun ride, if not a bit outlandish. But what I found really cool is a good deal of this story is taken straight up from CSX 8888 'Crazy eights' incident which happened in 2001 in Ohio. No last minute save at a hairpin turn, but there was a runaway train caused by someone who didn't set the switches right and got off the train. Two people running a different train did pull off on the side, disconnect their engine follow and couple with the runaway train from behind. They were a 47 year veteran and rookie conductor. The train company did try and fail with a portable derailer, and the cops did try to shoot the emergency fuel cut off switch. However, unlike the film the one car was able to slow the speeding train down to a slow enough speed for someone else to board the runaway engine and stop it. Also, there was a backup train ready to join the tug against the runaway if needed. No one was hurt in the actual event, and the two men in a train didn't go off on their own accord chasing the train. But I am not going to begrudge them the drama on this one. Especially because it was inspired by, but not based on a true story. Overall, pretty good flick that matched the facts better than many that say they are based on a true story.

Unstoppable from beginning to end!
Having been a railfan for most of my life, I was intrigued when I saw the previews of this movie back in the fall. Having seen it on the big screen I was simply amazed at the thrill-ride I was on for 1 hr and 38 min. I know this movie is based on real-life events, though they were overexemplified in the movie simply because, well it was made to make money for the motion picture industry. You have 2 morons at the beginning of the movie who look like they belong anywhere but working in a rail yard, especially Ethan Suplee who hops out of the cab of a high-power locomotive attached to a consist of 39 cars while it is in motion, even though his co-worker warns him the air hoses are not attached, rendering the air brakes useless to stop the train!! Then you flash to a rookie conductor (Chris Pine) and a veteran engineer (Denzel Washington) whom are out on a routine day of hauling cargo. From there on out it is non-stop action. I have to admit that some of the scenes were rather ridiculous, if not entertaining and hold-your-breath types, such as the one where the lashup (2 locomotives connected together to haul heavier consists) driven by another veteran engineer (David Warshofsky) derails and explodes after 777 bumps it as it goes into the siding and also where the (what were they thinking?) young Afghanistan veteran is lowered from the helicopter onto the fast moving locomotive and gets knocked off when 777 hits the lashup hard. After that it is nuts with the drama and suspense as Pine and Washington try to speed up and couple their lone locomotive to a 41-unit train with 2 much more powerful locomotives in full throttle, how did they ever think they were going to be able to stop a 70-plus mph train with one older, well-used locomotive? Rosario Dawson did lend a very good performance in her role as yardmaster and communicating and connecting with Pine and Washington during their daring chase.I will admit I was on the edge of my seat in the theater when this was released in November and eagerly awaited the DVD release, though I have to admit it isn't quite as riveting on a TV screen as it is in a theater. The ending was a bit of a letdown as it just simply ended and with no air brakes I don't see how Chris Pine could have braked that 75-mph train in a very short distance. The one nice plus is he reunited with his estranged wife and child. Guess it takes a near death tragedy to bring a couple back together...All in all, a great movie worth watching for a thrill ride. Think I saw it 4 times in the theater.

Is it unstopable .
This is a smashing film ,keeps u glued u find yourself leaning when the trains nearly coming off the track.Denzel Washington is the train driver n Chris Pine is the green conductor they r the main players .This film is based on true events . Two track engineers who r basicley lazy beggers get a39car train going without connecting the brakes !! The 1 who's actually driving the train to move off the main track jumps out of the cab to pull the leaver so the train can move to a safe area. But as usual something goes wrong The train starts getting faster and the engineer nose dives into the gravel attempting to get back on.Now there's a runaway .After numerous attempts to try n stop the train ,Denzel n Chris go after the 777 train in reverse. There's underlying issues with both Denzel and Chris to make the film more interesting.+Connie hooper the track boss ,and the Mr Galvin ,Boss at head office to make the film entertaining. Will they stop the train ?? You will have to watch it.See if u can see the only part of the film which I found a bit of a let down its near the end .If u were keeping in touch with the driver n conductor of the rescuing train u would let them know every scrap of info that would be of advantage not just watch til some one asks u ??? it's just a bit irritating in what basicley a bob on film.👍

Unstoppable might not be adrenaline fuelled, but it is an extremely watchable flick.
Unstoppable might not be adrenaline fuelled, but it is an extremely watchable flick. The collaborations between the late Tony Scott and Denzel Washington were not going to set the world on fire. Yet I keep getting drawn back to them. The competence both behind the camera and on screen makes for thrilling films, and Unstoppable is no different. A train is left stupidly on full throttle and is unmanned. Carrying hazardous cargo, two train drivers take it upon themselves to stop this train from potentially killing thousands. It does sound ridiculous, right? You would be correct. Now I'm no train expert but you would think you could remotely stop a train these days? Regardless, I find this to be fun. I can always watch this and not become bored. It's not everyday someone compares a train to a missile, just that alone puts a smile on my face (evidently I'm sadistic). What prevents this from being a mind numbingly boring action flick is the focus on troubled personal lives. Washington and Pine's characters both have difficult times away from work, and its through them discussing this that they actually bond closer. The impending doom as Dawson's sassy yet professional character consistently exclaims "6 minutes!" or "it's just passed milestone 46, you gotta hurry up!" in order to create thrills. Slightly uninspired but it does the trick. All the performances were competent, nothing outstanding but it gets the job done. The different techniques in order to try and halt this train were interesting to say the least. Derailing it, forcing a train ahead of it to try and slow it down, shooting at a tiny switch...some real genius work there...! Scott's direction was fast and frantic which assisted in maintaining the adrenaline, safe to say he did have a unique style which I fully appreciated. Look, you'll either watch Unstoppable thinking "I say, this is absolute tosh!" or you could sit back, relax and just enjoy what's on screen. Please be the latter, because this is a good time and y'know...not every film needs to be extraordinary.

Explosive 'on Track' Action Thriller
Great film... The action ramps up and carries the viewer along... the tracks (in this case!).Denzel is superb as is his wont ably supported by Chris Pine (Star Trek) and enhanced by the lovely & talented Rosario Dawson!Sadly, this was Director Tony Scott's last film...Incidentally, he was the younger brother of another well known Director - Ridley Scott (Alien / The Martian)

A masterpiece of an action movie.
There's nothing stunningly original about the central (only) plot; driverless train loaded with toxic chemicals speeding towards heavily populated area, another train loaded with school kids etc. etc. This film could easily be relegated to the already swollen ranks of dire Channel Five afternoon movies but that is never going to happen - this film is absolutely brilliant. If you were feeling cynical then you could just tally up all of the standard action movie tick boxes; they're all there - experienced old-timer, new recruit, corporate bean-counters, broken marriages, police cars crashing, stuff going bang and, of course, a huge train. It is, however, totally impossible to not enjoy this film. The cast are superb, the pace is absolutely relentless, the tension builds steadily to an almost unsustainable level and, despite an utterly predictable ending all you can say as the credits roll is `Wow, what a fantastic film'.
