A Worthwhile Read
If you are a student of eastern thought, specifically the Chinese POV, this ancient text, composed of several hundred versus is really a very good, and interesting read. It is not about the "search for enlightenment", per se, but that is its outcome. Instead it deals with this masters everyday observations of life around him. It is a refreshing departure from the deep mysticism so often found in such writings, most of which is difficult for the western mind. I would definitely recommend it if you see yourself as described in the first line, above.

Invaluable
For my opinion of William Scott Wilson as a translator (excellent), see my review of his translation of the Tao Te Ching. The translation and notes are a delight to read. (Always read Wilson's footnotes!)Every person in western society should read this book. We do not have to embrace Hung Ying-ming's philosophy, but I've known few people in my life who would not benefit from it. I was so impressed I bought copies for my sons. While some of the specific advice in this book don't apply or are impractical in the modern world, the principles generally do, and will add to the value of life.

Ancient yet timeless truths
This is a book that can work as a confirmation of what we know but can't fully express about human nature and all it's workings. The author perhaps had a vast amount of experience in life and the clarity to see to the core of how life unfolds for everyone regardless of status, race, religion or culture.A valuable guide to answers that evade us when trying to come to grips with the seemingly irrational behaviour of intelligent people.

has been published under other names
I have almost all the books translated by William Scot Wilson so when I found this "new" one I jumped at buying it. He has two previous works which are identical but still it is a good book

A thoughtfully rendered translation of a seminal work.
Good book. A thoughtfully rendered translation of a seminal work. Highly recommended for anyone interested in a deeper than usual explication of the enduring wisdom of true classical Chinese sages.

One of the Greats
This is one of the best books I have read so far. If you're into Chinese philosophy, poetry, Taoism or Buddhism this book is for you. There's not much else to say other than definitely get this book.

Great translation of a middling text.
I'm a huge fan of Wilson as a translator but the Caigentan itself is scattered and incoherent, I'm assuming this has come from the original text rather than Wilson's choices around structure. It's like an ancient coffee table book - it's a struggle to find any flow or pace in the ideas and it can be hard to digest as a result. There are certainly clear influences from Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism throughout the text and accurate reflections on the ideas from each of these schools, but you might be better off chasing a handful of the classic texts from each rather than trying to work your way through this title.Check out Analects, Chuang Tzu, Dhammapada etc. first if you are interested in the Three Schools before using this as a source.

A Delight
Like a fine tea this is a book to be sipped and savoured.A delightful read overflowing with wisdom and good common sense. The work of an Eastern Sage who in a single verse can instill the wisdom for which a western philosopher would require volumes.
