The Crew Of The Oregon Is Back
Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon return in another fast-paced adventure. In 1902, a German scientist is killed when the ship he is on is destroyed in the eruption of Mt. Pelee. Claiming to have found Oz, the scientist was on the verge of a dramatic breakthrough.Fast-forward to over a century later. Cabrillo and his crew become entangled with a Venezuelan admiral intent on sinking their ship. The female admiral is in possession of stolen American technology known as Piranha; a small undersea craft which can drill perfect holes in the hull of a ship. The admiral received her technology from a traitorous American weapons designer. To make matters even worse, this same person seems to have also completed the work started over a century earlier by the German scientist killed in the volcanic eruption. Now, this person has the ability to see practically anywhere at any time.Intent on taking control of the U.S. government, the designer's next target has become Air Force 2; the private plane of the vice-president of the United States.Meanwhile, Cabrillo has faked the sinking of the Oregon to throw the weapons designer and his accomplices off their trail, but will Juan and his team be able to stop this madman before it's too late?I found "Piranha" to be a great read. I miss Jack Du Brul's writing style, but I feel that Boyd Morrison did an excellent job telling this story. The characters are as lively as ever, and the story is well-conceived and full of action, adventure, and surprises. Highly recommended.

I have loved The Oregon Files series
I have loved The Oregon Files series, so I was predisposed to love this book, too. While it was good, I didn't love it as much as the others. This book was filled with action and things blowing up and getting shot, accompanied by a well-described cafeteria of weaponry. For some, I guess that would be a "plus." I felt that the action and weaponry took over the available space on the page. Unlike previous books, there was minimal character development, not even getting well acquainted with most characters. I missed, too, the descriptions of life on the Oregon itself. The Piranha was worth reading, but, to me, it slipped into the stereotypical car/boat chase to blow up the bad guys to the detriment of getting to know the characters well and seeing them grow and change.

THE VERY BEST OF RECENT CUSSLER NOVELS!
THE BEST CLIVE CUSSLER NOVEL IN YEARS! For many years, Cussler, arguably the best action-adventure novelist of the past century, initially published 17 single-authored novels, starting with Mediterranean Caper in 1973 and ending with Trojan Odyssey in 2006, all in the Dirk Pitt series. He also single-authored the initial novels in the Numa Files series. I've read all of these NYT Bestsellers, and every one is excellent, with continuous action, highly-developed characters, and outstanding writing style. Unfortunately, then came the long series of co-authored novels, with each of several series written by different co-authors. These novels are a very mixed bag, some very good (e.g., with Paul Kemprecos as co-author) and others not so good.HOWEVER, this newest novel in the Oregon Files series, is the BEST Cussler novel I've read in years. The co-author is Boyd Morrison, and this book is truly outstanding. In fact, it's as good as the original single-authored Cussler books. If there is such a thing as a real page-turner, Piranha is it. There is non-stop action from start to finish, character development is excellent , the story line is fascinating, and there are plenty of twists and surprises that keep those pages turning. If you like fast-paced, action novels, Piranha is a MUST.

A lot of action but credulity? Not so much.
While I am a Cussler fan, especially of the original Dirk Pitt and the Oregon Files novels, you can tell that the "Cussler formula" is wearing thin. While Juan Cabrillo and his merry band of mercenaries aboard the Oregon save the world yet again, the redundant descriptions and foregone conclusions are becoming tedious. Plus, in this outing, the technology and science simply does not hold water. Like, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it is great to have familiar characters act in familiar ways, but like that movie, the suspension of disbelief needed to accept the plot is stretched a bit too far.

Science, Warfare, Ego's and Juan Cabrillo's heroics all come together for a great novel
Another in the Oregon Files Series and it does not disappoint. Captain Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon are set on another adventure that will "save the world!" Well, it doesn't seem that way, but you could argue that this will be the end result. There is plenty of action to keep everyone happily reading away until they get to the end. The gist of the story is that a highly intelligent engineer seems to have the power to know everything and see everything and he is going to use that power to shape the world to his liking. How is he getting his information and what can be done to stop him?The crew of the Oregon will discover that this engineer has found a way to build a "telescope" that can see into any structure or natural enclosure and see and hear what is going on. Think about it, if he could sit in on a Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting about a military campaign, hear their strategy, see their maps and computer screens he could then sell that intelligence to the opposing side and reap a bountiful reward for helping the enemy to overpower the plans of the Joint Chiefs.Does that seem far fetched? Well, that's the problem, it appears that Kensit can do just that and no one knows how he is able to pull it off. Add into the mix a rogue Admiral from the Venezuelan Navy on a path to destroy Cabrillo and the Oregon and make millions selling weapons to North Korea and you have an amazing story.I am really happy with this addition to the Oregon Files. The writing is superb and the concept is amazing. I don't know a lot about science and how this technology all works, but Boyd Morrison gives enough background to help you understand and want to learn more. I think that Morrison is a great credit to the Clive Cussler stable of writers.Enjoy!

DuBrul was going to be a hard act to follow. I enjoyed his co-authorship so much I got into his Philip Mercer series and will look forward to a new DuBrul and Mercer book this September. We had the name of Boyd Morrison a few months before this release and got a couple of his books on offer prices to see what I thought. I thought they were competent actioners with decent stories and well developed characters in Locke and Grant ( who fairly predictably pop up to help in a cameo role in this book). Still, such is my affection for the Oregon and her crew I was dubious about the change of author. I needent have worried too much. The story is very much of the type we are used to and the characterisation is untouched. It is the Oregon files that we know and love although I marked it down for being a bit short, something I noticed on the NUMA files series under Graham Brown. Well worth a read

The Title is wrong on this Novel!
ODD....for a Clive Cussler novel. I have read all of his novels since the early 1990s. This sory is strange in that the title is "Piranha". But the word "piranha" doesn't appear until page 222! ...and is just a casual reference. The word is then mentioned only one or 2 more times in the book. The book should be entitled "Sentinal", as the story revolves around this project. And, I am still not sure why in most of Cussler's novels, a "Caucasian" male or female is never described using the word 'white'; yet, every African or African-American character description includes the color 'black'. Are we to assume, then, that all characters are white-skinned, unless otherwise noted? Hmmm.

Cussler can do no wrong and here in Piranha he excels, the crew of the Oregan once again defy all comers with their exploits superbly outlined by Clive Cussler. I have reaad all the Oregan file books and this one ranks among the very best, if you have never read one then this is the book for you if like me you've read them all then this is definitely the book for you. Fast paced with excitement on every page i defy you to put it down before finding out what happens next which tends to make late nights very late nights. Recommend it to your friends before reading it yourself you won't be wrong. Buy Piranha but don't lend it out you won't get it back!

Not a book you'd really want to get your teeth into. You'd need to be a more-than-devoted-fan to want to rush and buy this. Lots of confusing over-detailed information to start with, helpfully sorted out on my Kindle version by some material being repeated. Characters have increasingly corny conversations without much depth and and even less point to them. The storyline seems more improbable than exciting and gets weaker as it goes on. Seems like a tired out genre which might best sink without trace.

Another great instalment in the Oregon files
Another great instalment in the Oregon files, I loved it.The crews money has been robbed from their main top notch bank. The "chairman" will not stand (even lopsided) for that.An enemy that matches, or even over matches them, at sea. And he ruthlessly cuts through his enemies too. This time the crew of the Oregon might just be in trouble they can't handle

Fantastic novel written with great style. Consuming but not overly complex story line that evolves and is compelling. Onto the next one!!

Adventure Story
Excellent book for those who love no nonsense adventure stories. As is usual with Clive Cussler books the plot is multi-threaded, which is why I am a real fan of his.

Cussler loses the plot
The latest offering in the Oregon series has the fatal flaw ov being totally over written. Cussler would never have fallen into that trap. Words do not make up for well written action. The plot is also over complicated, too much memory needed for too many characters doesn't help. The perlmutter character has been turned into a parody of an eccentric English gentleman.

Typical cussler genius

Good, but not his best
Typical fast paced action you expect from this series, but with less character work than normal, some of the plot was under developed and it all felt a bit rushed. I won't give up on the series, but wouldn't recommend it for an entry to the Oregon files, there are better books in the series.

Brilliant Again.
Clive Cussler. Another of those brilliant fiction books, to pass the holiday away lazing in the Sun. Once you start it gets more difficult to set down. Love them. Just about to download the next one Oregon Files #11 The Emperors Revenge.
