Prentice Hall Molecular Model Set For Organic Chemistry

I ordered this kit to get me through my organic chemistry class at the university, and it more than does the job. The model kits that my school provides are the spring type bonds with wooden molecules, not bad at all but this kit has several advantages the others.1) Bonds are easily rotated giving you all the different perspectives in the same molecule2) Molecules such as cyclohexanes "flip" like a dream allowing you to observe axial and equatorial atomic positions clearly3) The space saving bonds give you another option to look at the molecule without all the clutter of springy bonds- Overall this kit is perfect for pre-med level organic chemistry (not too sure about more advanced classes that Chemistry majors may take) It has planty of atoms and bonds and holds shape extremely well.- I am constantly being asked where I got it and classmates are always coming to me to observe my models since they are just more clear with this kit.- One of my favorite things to do is put four different color atoms on a carbon using the space saver bonds and bring it to the exams so I can check for chirality by lining up atoms, I find this to be super effective and havent missed a chirality question yet! (Also helps out a ton with R and S enantiomers if you make two)Sure it may cost a few bucks more than something else, but it could help you make the grade.And did I mention, its just fun!

This is the perfect gift for the organic chemistry student or all around Poindexter in your life. You can build small chain organic molecules. There aren't enough 'carbon' pieces to really make any of the larger biological molecules, and the set could use a few other important atoms. But all in all, it's worth the money. My O-Chem professor recommended this to me. Building molecules with this set is very useful when studying concepts like enatiomers and ring structures. If you're a college student like me, you owe it to your future self to consume every study aid available to you. There are three learning-types, and the American education institution only caters to 1/3 of learners. Or rather 1/3 of the the learning types. This helps if you're more of a hands-on person, especially when trying to understand invisible little molecules.

I bought this kit when I was a college sophomore about 14 years ago (gasp!). And yes, it was precisely the same product being sold here today. I'm not entirely sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, since there doesn't seem to have been any improvements - but hey, if it ain't broke, right?After forgetting about it for many years, I recently found it again in a box in the attic and was thrilled to discover I hadn't lost it, or given it away, or burned it with all the rest of my school things. I had always got a huge kick out of playing with it in school, and of course, I started playing with it again immediately! Gotta admit, it's hard to put down - kinda like catnip for nerds, which I guess makes me one.Memory Lane aside, it's a solid little set, and includes the following pieces:28 Hydrogen (white)14 Carbon (black)8 Oxygen (red)8 Chlorine (green)4 Nitrogen (blue)2 Bromine (orange)2 Iodine (purple)40 Single bonds (space-fill)40 Single bonds (open)12 Double bonds (open)Of course, some of the pieces above can be used in a pinch to represent atoms that aren't listed, but I rarely (if ever? *scratch head*) found that necessary in my basic chem classes. Overall, it was an excellent tool, and well worth the somewhat inflated price. I can remember buying many a text book that cost many times more - few of which proved as helpful as this kit, and none of which were as entertaining.If I had to cite a negative, I'd have to admit they were a bit stingy with the carbon molecules - and sadly, the only other pieces that rival carbon's chiral-yumminess are the nitrogens, which are also in short supply. Besides, your molecule looks stupid with bunch of blue nitrogens pretending to be carbons - and who wants a stupid-looking molecule when your trying to be all brainy and stuff!? Consequently, I couldn't quite make some hydrocarbons of medium complexity, including my very most favorite molecule of all time! ...which shall here remain nameless.However, this is all easily remedied! And in a way, that's what brought me to this page on Amazon to begin with. After all these years I'm going to buy another set just for fun! HA! With two of these babies, I'll be able to make almost ANYTHING. Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!

I love this model kit. It helps visualize concepts in organic chemistry. One such concept for me was how the electronegative interaction of certain atoms change the properties of a compounds, depending on how they are attached. I was having a terrible time with it until my professor showed me with a model kit. After I saw him demonstrate I bought this kit. It’s fantastic and I would highly recommend it if you’re going to be studying chemistry.

Bought this because I started organic chemistry as a chemistry student. Chose the brand new version. The atoms (the balls) and the sticks are hard to use since they have to be for the structures to be stable. It’s fun joking about my fingers getting skinned off at times but using the screw method works than the recommend push and pull on the package.

All was fine except the instructions were not included in the package. They stated it was, but it was not.

this model kit was worth every penny. the convenient storage box makes it easy for me to find the parts, however, the parts are a bit stiff and a little hard to push together and pull apart. I purchased my kit new and i am confident the more i use the parts, the easier they will be to manipulate. This kit is very helpful in solving some of those very long and confusing organic chemistry problems. My teacher uses this kit during lectures and also allows us to use the kit during quizzes and exams. I got an A on my first quiz!

Good Book for Chemist

This is a really useful product. These ARE the molymods(TM) that schools accross the UK use. The contents is quite sufficient for making a lot of organic models, other kits may offer a better range of odd atoms ie metals etc(see Philip Harris).---Philip Harris is an eductaional supplier, but does supply on an individual basis---The space filling model parts (little connectors) arent needed by myself. The kit is great to show the difference between boat/chair cyclohexane, and other such possible structural complexities. The separation tool is quite useful to save a lot of effort, cos the bonds are very strong on the first use.An all round great kit for A-level/University Organic students. I would recomend this kit, escpecialy at the price of £18.89 I paid.(-Amazon.co.uk, great fast service, even by cheque-)
