Dutton-Lainson Company DL1602A 1600 lbs Plated Pulling Winch

Reliable, Strong, Made in the USA
Great winch! dDoes the work, will likely last decades, and didn't cost hundreds of dollars.I bought this to replace the one on a trailer I had just bought, which was 30+ years old.The old one still pulled the pontoon out nicely but just felt better with something newer. Prices and review for winches are all over the place. But, I figured if the old one was still going after decades, it must be a reliable brand. So, I researched the brand and found this winch is American made - by a company that over 100 yrs old. I bought larger than needed since it was only a few bucks. With the power, gearing, and handle length, it requires no effort at all to pull the pontoon out of the water. No downside to this winch. **Company website says it can take cable or strap.

Direct Replacement
This winch was a direct replacement for the one we had on our boat trailer, which is 13 years old. The strap recently broke and the original winch had a fair amount of rust on it. I decided to go ahead and replace everything - the winch (including the nuts, washers and screws) and the strap. Before mounting the new winch, I sprayed it down completely in CRC rust inhibitor. I didn't use the nuts and washers that came with this winch but instead upgraded all of them to stainless steel. This winch is a little pricier than others of comparable capacity. In fact, I saw others for half as much that probably could have done the job and handled the load. However, the original one which this winch is replacing served us well for 13 years. I view this as one of those "you get what you pay for" situations. My expectation is to get at least as many years out of this one.

Does not include strap or hook
My fault for not realizing this doesn't include the strap or the hook, but I wish it were made obvious on the product details page. Now, I am spending my morning driving to Lowe's, Walmart and Academy Sports stores to find a strap and hook. So far, all I can find are complete winch sets, which include hook & strap, for a much cheaper price, and the same weight/strength rating. If someone is buying a new winch, most likely they will also want new strap with it, so just sell it that way!

Weak locking pal spring.
The locking pal spring was not installed properly upon arrival. Thought ergonomic, the extended handle is too long for my application, striking the bow of my RXPx300 Sea Doo.BUT MOST NOTABLY: The spring does not keep the locking pal tight against atheism crank cog. A bump of the handle left the pal disengaged.

Great hand winch
This was a replacement for an older Dutton-Lainson winch. I moved up in capacity hoping to make it easier to winch boat on trailer. This made a world of difference. Plus you can't get a better made winch that will last !

Perfect Fit
This was a perfect for for my Chariot boat trailer. 1992. I did need to drill some new holes because the original bolts (on the trailer) snapped off. However, this unit has additional convenient holes for mounting, so it was very easy. It is Zinc plated. I'm on fresh water so I'm sure this will last me as long as I'll ever need it. Cheers.

Very nice, and sturdy
Very nice, and sturdy, high-quality winch. I liked the fact that it came bare of cable or strap. I easily loaded the Dutton-Lainson 25' flat strap on it, which should be able to recover my 19' long boat, on my 20' trailer. It seems to be electro-plated galvanized, rather than hot-dipped galvanized. I will be using it for fresh-water use, so it should be serviceable for many decades.
