Perfect for parent refresher or for kids just learning the concepts
It has been a number of year since finishing high school (we won't say exactly how long either) but with my children getting into the higher levels of math I have been look for hours on the best way to lay out everything that they will need to learn in high school years. We personally homeschool and any book that lays it all out is huge with me. I just wanted to make sure I was covering all of the parts that are needed for graduation. This book is very through and goes through every step. Some of the concepts I never even got in high school it now coming clear so that I can show it to my children. I do wish though that they would have some worksheets in the book or some problems to prove that the children understand each concept instead off having to hunt for worksheets. This is a great book to cover concepts for 6th and 7th grade. Overall very pleased and would recommend for any homeschool family or if you are having trouble helping your children and need a refresher on how to do all these problems. This was a part of our homeschool purchases. This was a used book but just as good as a brand new book.

Great math book to prep for return to college.
It has been several years since I finished High School and this year I am pursuing a degree in Engineering. I spent a lot of High School time slacking and wanted to make sure there I had zero holes in my arithmetic when I entered college. This is why I started with this book of Basic Math and Pre-Algebra."The Humongous Book" series is a fantastic way to "brush up" and make sure your math skills are where they need to be. I would recommend this as a refresher and that you continue with the The Humongous Book of Algebra Problems: Translated for People Who Don't Speak Math and The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems: For People Who Don't Speak Math. I feel much more confident that I will actually enjoy my math classes and have much less work and stress. I always felt "math inadequate" and the confidence boost alone is beyond the cost of this book.I find the books work well for my mind, with simple examples and lots of problems for you to solve to assure that you have the equations committed to memory. I prefer things to be kept simple and let me practice several times.I would suggest that every student buy the entire series to reduce the chance of struggling BEFORE they enter advanced math classes. Jobs with math intensive skill sets earn more and I figure this extra work will pay off in the long run. I also enjoy being the guy in class who "is the smart math guy". :)

Good for an adult who has forgotten old math skills or needs to learn new ones
This is a good book, and I'm glad to have it but it's more a book of explanations than a book of problems. It's basically written in a way that explains how to work out math problems, and it's very good about that. Each new explanation has one problem to solve. If you need more than that, you must go online or have another book to find problems to solve, which isn't a big deal but it would be nice to have at least three or four problems to work out before going on to the next higher level of complexity.I hope that doesn't scare anyone away from buying the book. Just know that you'll need to identify a place online that gives you free problems to solve because practicing math is an important step to getting a good grip on it.I like the book and would highly recommend it for anyone who studied math a long time ago and wants a quick, easy to understand refresher. It's not a good book for a kid who is learning math, but would be a good reference for the parent who is helping hir or her child.

Got me up to speed fast
I am an adult who has returned to school for nursing after 15 years away, having first earned a BA in English that required me to take no math classes whatsoever...so the last math I took was in high school nearly 20 years previously. Fast forward to my very, very dire situation - a required math placement test combined with my inability to remember really basic things like which way to move the decimal point when multiplying or dividing decimals and how to multiply and divide fractions. Enter this book - very clear, concise, and witty explanations of all of those concepts and more. As most reviewers have stated, there are relatively few practice problems. That was mostly fine with me, as I was using it as a refresher and basically remembered what the steps were as soon as I was reminded. However, for certain topics, I used the books in the Dummies and Demystified series (and found the explanation for finding percentages in the Demystified book far more concise and clear). Anyway, when I took the college placement test, I placed into the regular math classes and did not have to take (and pay for) remedial math! I'm now taking college algebra and love the follow-up Humongous Book of Algebra Problems, and look forward to working with The Humongous Book of Statistics Problems when I move even further on in math!

Great resource!!
I am homeschooling my 8th grader and math is not a strong suit for either of us. His program is online, but this book has really helped us when we get stuck and the online videos aren’t helping. I especially like the detailed narrative explanations of each problem, as opposed to just the math computations. Those really help someone with a non-math brain like me! There are lots of examples so that we can go through a couple together, then he can try a few without reading the explanation until he is done. I also appreciate that the narratives are written as if the person is talking to you. Great resource!

NOT A WORKBOOK - It is a book of FEW examples and LOTS of WORDY explanations
Not a workbook - It is a book of few examples and lots of wordy explanations. I would have liked for the book to have lots of problems with the answers and the explanations located at the back of the book. But the book is full of wordy explanations. It is NOT A PRACTICE WORKBOOK.
