Mastering Light & Shade in Watercolor

Best watercolor book I've purchased!
I have so many books about watercolor. They are all basically the same. Written to the novice level. Usually 1/4 of these books are dedicated to basics such a brushes and paper and how to add water.....how to make brush strokes.....OMG it's like having training wheels on. In most books there's a concentration on "step by step" demonstrations which never really work for me. I prefer watching video demonstrations. This book however only has a few demos in the rear. This book is obviously written for the intermediate to advanced artist. Not too much written about paper, brushes, and paints, it's literally 2 pages and that's it. A few step by step demos, but mainly the author showing his beautiful work and pointing out why and how he did what he did. The author teaches how to have a relationship with your subject matter and how to invoke emotion in paintings. This book is more like having a conversation with a master rather than an instructional book. The book is beautiful and it should be cherished. My book was delivered in excellent shape. It looks brand new except for the edges of the pages are yellowing. GET THIS BOOK BEFORE IT SELLS OUT. I already want to highlight areas of the book but I'm scared to because it's in such good shape, lol.

Buy it before they sell out!
As soon as I opened this book I knew this is an important watercolor book. The methods he discript here is very traditional, fundermental English watercolor techniques. Please disregard the three one star reviews, they don't know what they were talking about. The book was published by international artist publisher. The same publisher that published the Zbukvic book. I learned this book from a well know watercolor artist Chien Chung Wie who used the demos in this book in his class. For less than $20 you can get a great book from a great artist. Buy it before they are all gone! Practice the demos over, over and again and again!!!

Unique
This book is unique in content details and instructive in effective way, something seen in only a few books of this type. I found very useful to me as basis for improving basic skills and his works themselves to be quite inspiring.

I have no respect for his book.Yet.
I can tell that the last reader of this book didn't get much out of it. I received it in great condition. This kind of reference book should be used again and again and again. I plan to wear it out. Write in the margins. Fold the corners.Spill things on it.Drag it around.Use it to death. With due respect.

thorough teaching by example
Another watercolour instruction book by a master painter, and a slightly unusual one. Many of the scenes depicted are in exotic locations from a Western viewpoint, such as Bali or Nepal. This adds interest, and the artist states that he enjoys the brilliant light in such places, hence the book title. He also deliberately varies his style, so one painting may be highly detailed, the next very loose and impressionistic. As with many such books, the paintings themselves are more of an inspiration than the text. Ong Kim Seng is not promoting any gimmick or approach that is supposed to bring instant results. Nevertheless, there is a clear structure to the content that provides a plan of how the artist works. This is re-inforced by ten step-by-step demonstrations, each comprising a photograph of the scene, about eight smallish images of the painting as it develops, and a larger image of the completed work. I always study such examples carefully, as you can learn a lot that is not explicit in the text. (In fact, video is better than a book for this). For example, how the artist does the preliminary drawing, an area nearly always neglected. There is a lot of material here, but don't expect a magic solution. This book provides useful learning information, and the paintings are varied and interesting. Nevertheless I found it more like a reference work, it somehow failed to really inspire me.

After buying her art books for the last 10 years ...
After buying her art books for the last 10 years my wife really, REALLY loves this book. She has shown it to her colleagues at art class and they all wish to borrow. But she says, "No Chance buy your own"!
