Best bits of some of our favorites
When the book starts, it feels a little like Percy Jackson. A Special kid born to non- magical parents with talents hidden from him for his own safety. Suddenly his talents are revealed and he must run /hide/ learn to fight to survive. And later in the book comes the search for the magical item. And of course the great battles throughout. But it also has a little bit of Harry Potter in it too - people you never knew watching over you from a distance, family members keeping secrets, everyone waiting for you to play part in a destiny you never knew about. It also has all of the intrigue and politics and conflicts between different factions. Each wanting to either control or eliminate our new hero. And then there are elements of the typical high school drama usually found in the " normal modern teenager suddenly has magic" genre. Balancing magic training with normal school life, the conflict between jocks and scholars, bullies and "mean girl" and non- magical friends with " no clue what's going on with you bro, but we got your back" .... and a little smidge of romance. But this book takes all the feelings of those favorites and blends in old world history with modern events and well fleshed out characters. Some characters you think you know their role in the story and then .... plot twist ! But just like any true favorite, just when the end is near and all hope seems lost, somehow the good guys save the world again and we get our nice happy ending. I loved it as an adult reader, as a teacher I love even more when I am able to recommend books I have read to my students. Not all pass that test, but this one is clean enough for me to do so ! Just goes to show that young adult fiction does not have to be filled with profanity and adult situations to hold a readers attention. OK. Review complete. Now I can download book 2 !

Feeling Lukewarm About This One
Sixteen-year-old Jack thought that he had a heart condition until he forgot to take his medicine one day. It turns out that the medication was to mask his extraordinary strength. The premise is that certain people are wizards, enchanters, or warriors as evidenced by a stone that they carry behind their hearts. The magical people are hidden in plain sight even as they continue to wage a centuries old war that is tied loosely to the War of the Roses. Jack is a reluctant warrior which makes him both a hero and a target. This is a long book. The story begins with Jack at high school and them follows him on his quest to retrieve the special sword, through his training as a warrior, and then to the climatic battle. He is accompanied by a few loyal friends and his enchanter aunt. The story is linear and predictable. The focus is on the plot with more limited character development. This book is the first in a series and I am lukewarm about continuing.

An excellent read - even for us adults
I was recommended The Warrior Heir by a bookseller as an easy, exciting summer read. I was definitely not disappointed. The story is a fast-paced mix of teen coming-of-age and magical fantasy. Easy enough for teems to read with substantial plot and suspense to keep an adult interested, I would recommend this book to anyone who felt let down by the Potter series. There were enough loose ends to build on this first book, but not so many you're let hanging at the end. I would have prefered a few more details about the 5 guids of the Weir, but maybe more will be revealed in the 2nd book (The Wizard Heir) which I am about to start reading tonight!

Another good start to a series...
While waiting for the 5th installment of the Falling Kingdoms series, my attention has been diverted to Ms. Cinda Chima's work. She has first caught my interest on the Seven Realms series. I have devoured that series in a month-span. My urge on Fantasy just cannot be satiated, and so I have continued on with The Heir Chronicles series. Well, book one is another good read for me. The story derives from the Wars of the Roses in Britain but with magic and other mystical powers. A guild is formed by five members: wizard, soothsayer, enchanter, sorcerer, and warrior. In this guild, the wizards are the masters who abuse their powers and manipulate the Rules of Engagement to their advantage. If the Wars of the Roses are divided into two houses (Lancaster and York), this series is the same...it is divided by two factions (White Roses and Red Roses) whose wars and disagreements never stop. Then, there's Jack Swift who is borne a wizard but becomes a warrior--which is a rare situation to come by. So, his life is constantly in a brink of death due to the two factions in war. These are just some of the reasons what make this first installment interesting. I just love the work of this author.

Awesome Read for young and old!
Cinda Williams Chima did an awesome job of bringing her characters to life. I'm a fan of fantasy and this was a wonderful and pleasing read. Although it targets a young crowd, it's the type of story that anyone can be drawn in and carried away. Wizards, Warriors, Enchanters, a family sword, great friends, and a touch of romance brings this story alive. You meet Jack, his crazy Aunt, and his many protectors...and there are quite a number of them that work to keep this young boy alive as he discovers his life isn't as it seems. Beating in his wizard inherited heart is a warrior stone which makes Jack popular in the wizard world and. . . a target. You follow Jack and his many supporters as they fight to keep him safe from having to fight in a tournament he's doomed to lose...or is he?Read and find out!I'm looking forward to seeing what Book 2 brings.

good but not great
Book was good overall. Takes your attention and runs with it. Character depth was slightly lacking, would have benefitted from knowing the cast of side characters better and what role they play. Will continue onto second book in the series.

fell in love with it very easily
Very interesting book, fell in love with it very easily. Though I'm sure my copy is cursed, because every time I pick it up, the doorbell goes or the phone rings. People need to stop interrupting my read-time! LOL

Not a bad start to a YA/UF series with wizards, warriors and Highschool
I read that „The Warrior Heir“ was the first book C. Williams Chima published and that her other series were a lot better. Well, this book isn’t perfect and I am not enough of a fan to continue the series, but I will definitely try the author’s other series. In the small town of Trinity in nowadays Ohio, 16 year old Jack one day forgets to take his heart medicine and realizes that he isn’t only not feeling bad at all, but is even developing strange abilities. Long story short, Jack is a Warrior heir, has magic and is on the wrong end of the food chain of the secret world of wizards, warriors, enchanters and the like. The wizards rule the magical community and Jack has to learn and gear up fast to prevent them to use him as a kind of magical gladiator. From one day to the next, he has no idea whom to trust and how to juggle secret warrior training and Highschool life…Well, people are not what they seem, there is a rather cool showdown with deus ex machina moments and the book‘s ending is wrapping up things well enough that you can read the book as a stand-alone.What I really liked about the book was its atmosphere, the continuous sense of dread and danger Jack and his aunt felt. I actually felt it too. Jack as a character on the other hand, stayed rather bland and I had problems connecting to him. Maybe it was the changing 3rd person POVs, I don’t know, but I had to fight a bit to stay interested in his fate. And the alleged romance wasn’t really there either, the two teenagers rarely spent time together and so any feelings on anyone’s side didn’t feel real. But then the book showed that the author is well able to develop interesting plots and worlds and so I will just try another of her series.
