Catherine the Great [DVD]

A little 'hammy' in some parts but honestly I didn't mind as the series is well worth watching, historically fairly correct with some exceptions and the lead role of Helen Mirren's Catherine was stunning! It portrayed a strong, idealistic woman in a what was {and remained so} a patriarchal sovereignty. The slur that she was a highly sexed person was portrayed in a balanced and comparative way, not sensationalised or bawdy and reflected the accepted behaviour of men of the time in such positions.The costumes were correct for the period and sets/locations complementary so all in all an excellent series and enjoyable.

Good but not great. Very impressive to look at but lacks a bit in the storytelling.

I'm a big fan of Helen Mirren and love historical dramas so I was really looking forward to this - however it was a real let down. The script is not of the highest quality and some of the casting is all wrong. Catherine keeps going on about how gorgeous and handsome her romantic lead is and honestly HE'S NOT! He is totally miscast and spoils whatever chance this production had of being good. Don't pay a lot for it - wait til you can pick it up in a charity shop if you really MUST see it.

Impossible to know exactly what happened all that time ago, but when you have the quality of these actors then they bring the human side alive, as people react to joy and fear no matter the point in time.

A richly, brilliantly made costume drama with some of the worlds leading actors adding realism. I would highly recommend this for folk who have an interest in historical dramas, location scenes and Russian history. As a student of Russian history, it is quite accurate in many of the historical scenes it depicts.

Too much emphasis on gratuitous sex for me and showing off male bodies. Catherine the Great was a huge influence in the age of the Enlightenment. This was not particularly shown in the film. The acting however was superb on the part of Helen Mirren as always. Totally believable in the character. I just wish we could have concentrated more on her achievements rather than her sex life! The costumes too were incredible and well worth giving the film a viewing.

Loved the settings & characters, costumes & recreation of that era. I thought Helen Mirren’s portrayal of Catherine the Great lacked the depth & complexity, fire & intelligence I expect Catherine possessed. Disappointing that film did not touch on Catherine’s patronage of the arts - even as a sub-theme.

Wow factor? This had it, great acting, massive sets so lavish you can smell the polish on the floors! Beautiful costumes with seemingly no expense spared, an emotional roller coaster with Mirren at the centre of it all. Brilliant all round entertainment.

Catherine est un personnage mal connue en France.Comme toujours Helen Miren est remarquable.Pour l'actualité cette histoire permet de comprendre que la Crimée n'a jamais été ukrainienne mais Ottomane avant de devenir russe.
