Re-Cycle [Blu-ray]

I blame no one but myself for not loving this movie the first time around, as Re-Cycle is the posterchild for viewer-induced disappointment. For me personally, I expected something that mirrored the Silent Hill videogames - and considering how those Californian simpletons mucked up their attempt at a Silent Hill movie, I was drooling at the mouth to see if Re-Cycle succeeded where they had failed.Obviously, I deluded myself into believing that Re-Cycle was trying to be something it was never meant to be. Needless to say, I was severely disappointed after an initial viewing. Where were all of the incredibly disturbing, blood-soaked images? Where were the detailed puzzles? Where were the violent death scenes? They were nowhere - and I was angry that Re-Cycle turned out to be its own movie with its own themes. Go figure.Months later I started to think of the movie more and more. I thought to myself, "Yeah, that movie was mediocre, but that one scene was really cool." Then I pondered, "Wow, that other scene was sweet too, and that other one was awesome." Eventually, I decided to give it another go. That "other go" happened last night, and I ended up watching one heck of a movie.The fantasy elements kick in at around the 40-minute mark, but Re-Cycle doesn't stoop to boring you during the opening segments with superfluous exposition. From minute one it grabs you with some well-executed (albeit conventional) horror elements that become much less conventional during a second viewing when you identify references to the main theme of the film.Once the fantasy elements hit, Re-Cycle becomes a non-stop fantasy adventure. I cannot remember a horror film in recent memory with such relentless pacing. Much of this is owed to its fragmented transport of the lead protagonists. They may escape one danger by going through a door, but on the other side of that door is a completely different environment that is no less perilous. Some have criticized Re-Cycle for being scattershot and unfocused, but I would respectfully disagree considering how almost every single horror element references back to the overarching theme of the film. It's no masterpiece, but it works quite well - especially when you identify the references upon a second viewing.Now, there are flaws here that exist regardless of viewer expectation. There are some moments that get a bit too sappy and melodramatic for their own good (especially near the end), but if you can watch this movie for what it truly is - a fantasy/horror adventure guided by a single, simplistic concept - then you should enjoy it.On a side note, I can't really understand why Oxide Pang is so relentlessly criticized (to the point of unreasonableness) by so many people. It's exceedingly ironic that the people who complain about his scripts are the very same people who shout "masterpiece" when referring to those Japanese horror flicks from the 1960s (which will remain nameless) that have some of the worst scriptwriting in the history of horror cinema. In addition, Oxide's use of camera and sound is exceptional and probably second only to Ryuhei Kitamura.Nothing this guy does is ever good enough for anyone, even though his movies are better than 90% of everyone else's. Diary, The Detective, Abnormal Beauty, and Revenge (from the Bangkok Haunted anthology) combine to form the most impressive recent horror/thriller portfolio outside of Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Compare Oxide Pang to any American horror director and guy becomes an instant legend.

I really did not know what to expect when hitting play on Re-Cycle. I was sitting down on a chilly afternoon with some tea and figured this would be a great movie to relax and cuddle up under a blanket. What I found in Re-Cycle was one of the most astonishingly beautiful movies I have ever watched. I truly wish I would have purchased this in Blu-Ray.The beauty was mildly underplayed by a 'spirit/ghost' which takes focus within the first half of the movie. The protagonist in the film is an author exploring her boundaries by drifting from romance novels to a darker, more haunting world. Despite precautions that when writing about the subject she places herself in harms way to be subjected to ghosts and spirits. She calmly revels in the idea of experiencing this.This first part of the movie does this and focuses on the mild yet extremely effective ghost story surrounding the author. The effects were done tastefully and subtly and therefor caught my interest immediately. I prefer story-driven and character-driven suspense to power horror and Re-Cycle snatched me immediately by doing so. As the spirits progressively become more prominent, the movie descends down into a vibrant and extravagant world of dismal fantasy.Here, the visuals take precedence and captivate the viewer in surroundings that are breathtakingly beautiful and vast to regions that are dreadfully compelling and dark. At no point did I ever want to look away from this film. As the author progresses through this discarded world of remnants, we begin to learn about her, her guide and the world in which she finds herself. While the stories are not overly twisted and confusing, there is enough intelligence to the film to satisfy just about all viewers. I began to feel for the characters as their journey stretched farther and came to a close.And when I thought the movie was done, leaving me with a positive, elegant and refined sense of beauty and wonderment, the film adds in one final scene that brings parts of the movie together and leaves you to question a bit about it, too. I am so pleased with the ending as it did not leave the movie in a linear fashion where it is evident what happened, why it happened, and so on. The ending allowed moderate interpretation which, for me, leaves it open for additional viewings.This is not a horror movie, it is more fantasy than horror. While watching the film, I got the feeling of a darker The Chronicles of Narnia mixed with a little bit of Ringu.Overall, Re-Cycle was a great watch and trip. The visuals are nothing shy of captivating and beautiful and I would recommend this movie to any potential buyers in Blu-Ray. I look forward to watching this again with a friend and hearing their interpretation and level of appreciation for the visual worlds.

If you love fantasy movies then buy this. It is visualy stunning and the plot ain't half bad either. I am waiting eagerly for the region 2 version to be released to add it to my collection.

Sowas hab ich ja noch nicht erlebt oder als Film gesehen.Das war für mich ein herrlich morbider, beklemmender, wahnsinnig intensiver, teils minimal verstörender, aber gleichzeitig unglaublich schöner Alptraum, den ich mir da gerade angesehen habe.An sehr wenigen Stellen sind mir Effekte aufgefallen, die wirklich schlecht gealtert sind. Aber sch... drauf, das ist Erbsenzählerei, denn der Rest des gebotenen war für mich unglaublich fesselnd ab etwa spätestens 10 Minuten Laufzeit, mitreißend, absolut mitleidenstauglich, in seiner Lösung unglaublich schön, schon regelrecht erfüllend und mit seinem Ende ziemlich !!!Wow!!!.Ich hab hier mit nichts wirklich rechnen können, aber das war wohl genau richtig so, denn ich bin gerade ziemlich begeistert.Optik (mal wunderschön, mal desaströs, mal trist, mal endgültig) und Akustik (hier ist von beruhigenden Klängen bis zu industriallastigem Getöse alles dabei) des Films bilden zu allem auch noch eine absolute Einheit und sind absolut stimmig miteinander. Da aber auch nich die Geschichte wirklich klasse ist, ist da schon mal mehr gewonnen, als die meisten Filme können. Auch darstellerisch gibt's nichts zu meckern, kein asiatisches Overacting, alles ziemlich passend.Da es nix zu meckern gibt und zugegeben der Film mich ziemlich überfahren hat, kann ich mich nich nicht zwischen 4/5 und 4,5/5 entscheiden, aber die Tendenz geht eher zu 4,5/5. Wieso der Film eher mittelprächtige Kritiken hat, wundert mich.Hier wäre eine BR absolut wünschenswert. Die DVD hat schon eine unglaubliche Schärfe, wirkt oft überschärft, aber das ganze würde sich in HD wohl noch schicker anfühlen.

Nachdem ich an anderer Stelle von diesem Titel gehört hatte und das Artwork sehr interessant aussah, dachte ich mir, hol dir das Teil mal. Hin und wieder sollte man schon mal was riskieren und so hab ich mir nun die Special Edition des Filmes geholt, ohne ihn vorher gesehen zu haben. Der Film ist wohl am besten als eine Mischung aus Fantasy und Horror der eher sehr asiatischen Art zu beschreiben, handelt es sich doch um eine Hong-Kong/Thailand Produktion. Der Film fängt als reiner Horrorstreifen an, verlässt diesen Pfad aber zunehmends und die Welt der Verlassenen und der Geister, um die es hier geht, wird mehr und mehr zu einem eher mystischen, unheimlichen Ort, symbolisch auch aber nicht unbedingt sehr gruselig. Die Welt und deren verschiedenen Orte wurden jedenfalls grandios umgesetzt: "Re-Cycle" bietet unübertroffene Surrealität und strotzt nur so vor visueller Kraft. Hier haben die Macher allerlei Liebe zum Detail und außerordentlich viel Phantasie aufgebracht, das Ergebnis sieht einfach umwerfend aus. Dieser Punkt ist leider allerdings auch gleichzeitig die größte Stärke des Filmes. So betörend er für das Auge sein mag und einige Szenen durchaus Symbolcharakter haben, so sehr wirkt er mit der Zeit enorm steif in seiner Handlung und Erzählweise. Bis auf die ständig wechselnden Handlungsorte scheint irgendwie andauernd dasselbe zu passieren, was mit der Zeit sehr ermüdend wirkt. Auch sind die Figuren alle nur sehr unzureichend charakterisiert, Sympathien wollen nicht so richtig aufkommen und so fiebert man nur selten mit den Protagonisten mit. Zudem nervt die penetrante Musikuntermalung die beizeiten sogar in einigen Szenen leicht schmalzig daherkommt und sich ein wenig zu sehr in den Vordergrund drängt. Subtilität ist die Sache der Pang Brothers anscheinend nicht. Und wie man dann das höchst konfuse Ende einordnen soll, weiss man dann auch nicht. Schade, denn neben der Visualität ist die Idee der Parallelwelt und wie sie funktioniert doch sehr interessant und gelungen. Ein spannenderes Drehbuch und etwas mehr Zeit für die Figuren, vielleicht abzüglich einiger Horrorfaktoren und es wäre mehr drin gewesen. So sei gesagt, dass der Film schon alleine der Optik wegen ein Hingucker wert ist, eine Tatsache, die auch für die Verpackung der Special Edition DVD gilt: Sehr schönes wie dickes Digipack mit Magnetverschluss und zwei Booklets mit Artworks. Für Nachhaltigkeit wird "Re-Cycle" allerdings wohl nur schwer sorgen. In diesem Fall wäre ich ausnahmsweise für ein "Re-Cycl"-ing des Stoffes.

Die Gebrüder Pang, die mit The Eye einen der besten Vertreter der Asien Horror Welle ins Rennen schickten, erschufen mit Re-cycle einen Film der einem wahrscheinlich so schnell nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen wird. Einmal wegen der fast unbegreiflichen Optik und einmal wegen der vergebenen Chancen dem Film den Stempel "Meisterwerk" aufzudrücken. Er fängt erstmal wie der mittlerweile normale Geisterfilm an. Die Schriftstellerin Tsui sitzt an Ihrem neuen Buch und bemerkt seltsame Geräusche und Schatten in ihren vier Wänden. Obwohl man dies ja nun schon oft genug gesehen hat, ist dieser Part des Films spannend inszeniert und macht Lust auf mehr. Mehr bekommt man allerdings nicht, denn mitten im Spannungsaufbau wird man auf einen surrealen Psychotrip chauffiert der durch seine Bildgewalt für immer in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Eine völlig neue Welt wurde kreiert die Ihresgleichen wohl nicht so schnell finden wird. Was hier an filmischer Innovation geboten wird, dürfte in näherer Zukunft nicht zu toppen sein. Details werde ich euch ersparen da kaum eine Beschreibung der Optik gerecht werden kann. Dieses visionäre Augenfest ist aber auch der Knackpunkt des Films. Es ist so genial, das es die Story und auch die Spannung mit wenigen Schlägen aus dem Ring katapultiert. Zu sehr ist man dem visuellen Overkill erlegen wodurch kein Platz mehr für die "Rahmenhandlung" existiert. Hätte man versucht die Story auf den gleichen Level wie das Einfallsreichtum der Kulissen zu bekommen, hätte man wohl die Kategorie 11 Punkte einführen müssen. Somit wurde diese Chance leider vertan. Zudem ist die Reise durch die Artenvielfalt der Stilrichtungen nicht sehr gut in einander gemischt worden. Außer dem Grusel Anfang und der Fantasy Tour gibt es nämlich auch noch Ausflüge ins Zombie Genre und leider auch ins Drama. Passen die Zombies und die Fantasy Welt noch sehr gut zusammen befindet sich zwischen Fantasy und Horror Beginn schon größere Gräben. Das aber das Ende auf ein rührseliges Drama zuläuft schadet dem Film erheblich. Ich habe nichts gegen Dramen, ganz im Gegenteil, aber hier ist es völlig deplatziert. Besonders weil es extrem glitschig ist und mehr als nur den gehobenen Zeigefinger auf den Zuschauer deutet. Trotzdem muß man diesen Film unbedingt gesehen haben.

Schnelle pünktliche Lieferung zu einem fairen Preis. Der Film ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. Das kann aber bei asiatischen Filmen schon mal vorkommen.
