Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp

This book has 4 library stickers on the front of the book that cannot be removed without taking off the illustration of the cover and two torn pages, albeit small tears. The binding is loose enough that you can see the threading coming through the pages. I bought another book of the same title two weeks ago that was rated "good" condition and it was indeed "good" condition. This book is a generous "fair" condition. Wish the seller had been more fair in his/her rating of this book/title as it was the same high price as the book/title I bought that was in much better condition. My eight children and 21 grandchildren have loved this book. It's a keeper even with library stickers.

I've loved this book since I first read to my small children, sons as well as daughters. I've just purchased this copy for my three-year-old granddaughter. Liza Lou is a delight. She faces several unsavory characters in the Yellar Belly Swamp when she runs errands for her mother, like the Swamp Haunt, the Gobbledy Gook, a witch, and others. They all threaten her and she remains unflappable and fools everyone of them. She is a very good example of girl-power, child-power in the face of frightening things.Mercer Mayer's art is wonderful, his dialogue precise and believable. His heroine is sweet and strong. And I love her buddy, the possum. I've read many of his works and this is my favorite. In fact, it's my favorite young child's book.I can recommend this wholeheartedly. I hope you enjoy this as much as I. Recently I read this book to my grandmother friends and they, too, enjoyed it.

The first book I remember being read to me in elementary school in 1981. The librarian used to read to us doing all the different voices and he was so animated !!! This book and that librarian spawned my love of reading. I felt it was an essential addition to my collection.

I thought that this book was out of print and that made me sad. It was my favorite book as a child. My husband bought me a copy for my birthday and I read it to our little person. Now the little loves the book too!!

I've been a teacher for 30 years, This was a favorite book of my students and me. Liza Lou faces scary things and isbrave and goes from one challenge to another. The art and the diction are charming. Every page has her pet possum supporting her, quietly.

As a long-retired Nanny, I will just say that this book was super-popular with EVERY KID. This book is not just for young black girls, it is for young white Jewish boys, it is for white Moms and Dads, it is for older nieces and nephews, it is just plain old for everyone. I never tire of this book, and I never tire of reading it aloud. Courage, eloquence, and cleverness are for everyone. Props to Mercer Mayer for this New Classic!

I read this book to my children and now my grandchild. I love this sassy little girl and all the wonderful characters she encounters. It is a great companion book to "One Monster After the Other". Mercer Mayer is one of my all time favorites!!

Beautiful fun illustrations of animals and various swamp creatures, real and imaginary. Fun children's book.
