An easy to read, well written book packed full of great information
Eighteen chapters packed with interesting and helpful information! This book starts out with a little history of shrooms, some good to know things about the different species and how they grow. Health information is discussed (psilocybin mushrooms are neither toxic or addictive) and the authors cite results from scientific studies and how they have been used medicinally around the world. The chapters on growing your own start with basic information, and go on to advanced techniques. The lack of photos does make it difficult to understand some parts of the process. They do pack a lot of information into these chapters.

Disappointed
I just received this and have not finished reading it. I'm quite disappointed. First, there are no page numbers. I think that's the first time I've ever bought a book with such a glaring omission. Obviously, no copyeditor was employed to help produce this book. That is a MAJOR omission, for obvious reasons, but especially in a book with complicated recipes that require a lot of flipping around between chapters and pages. Absolutely inexcusable error for anyone publishing a book. Second, as I read through the first of the relatively "easy" methods for mushroom production, listed among the ingredients is a "spore syringe." It says to see Ch. 9 for info on creating obtaining spore syringes. In Chapter 9, it says that to create them, one needs to create a "spore print." What's needed to create a spore print? A mushroom cap. See the problem here? If you don't HAVE a mushroom cap, you can't use this method. So, the entire recipe is useless, since it assumes you ALREADY HAVE mushrooms. I went on to explore the next method, "Improved PF Tek." Among the necessary materials listed is "spore water syringes. " Again, same problem. Nothing is mentioned about how to create a "spore water syringe" without already having spores, or how to create spores. If employing a method requires one already HAVE mushrooms, the author should say so upfront, so newbies won't waste their time puzzling over the recipe only to find it is useless to them.

Comprehensive, insightful guide to 'shrooms'...a great read for the beginner inpsilocybin varieties.
Provides an insightful and comprehensive presentation of psychedelic experiences, explanations and guide to the many varieties of psilocybin mushrooms to include specific guidance for home cultivation and needed equipment. As a past user of other psychedelics, I found the first chapters particularly 'right on' with their descriptions of mental phases to anticipate from start to finish and how to prepare oneself before taking the journey.

TWO VOLUMES OF MAGIC
Hank Bryant has given his lucky readers two volumes of information about "magic mushrooms." There are instructions on accurate identification. lest the novice pick those that are toxic. There are tips on where to find these mushrooms, how to harvest them, and even how to consume them. With psilocybin mushrooms being decriminalized in many parts of the country, these books could not be more timely. After years of remaining on the periphery, these mushrooms are now at the center of a cultural phenomenon, and Bryant has provided an instructive user's manual. I regret that there are no page numbers or illustrations, but the diligent reader will be able to access the needed information nonetheless. The texts are reader-friendly, clearly written, and evocative of a special gift from Nature.

A comprehensive cultivation guide
The bulk of this book is dedicated to psilocybin cultivation techniques, so if you are looking for a book you can keep in your library as a handy reference then this book is highly recommended. I'm by no means an expert, having only tried the PF Tek method some years ago (successfully I might add), but the authors have added numerous additional techniques to cover just about every situation. There are a couple of layout errors which caused me a little bit of head scratching: the table of contents omits Chapter 4, and though page numbers for chapter headings are listed none of the individual pages have numbers, so finding the page you want can be a bit tricky.Part 1: Background and Safe Use.Being that I am more interested in the use of mushrooms than in growing, I wished there had been a bit more discussion regarding ways to dose, including making tinctures, but generally the information given is clear and jargon-free. The black and white pictures of the various species would not enable you to identify any of the species with certainty, but I don't believe the authors want anyone to wander off into the woods and collect mushrooms using only their pictures. In fact they make a point of telling people not to pick wild mushrooms unless accompanied by an experienced guide. Good advice.Parts 2 & 3: Basic and Advanced Cultivation.Lots of cultivation techniques given; something for everyone. If you can cook a meal by following a recipe, then it is likely that you would be able to grow shrooms by following the instructions given in this book.Part 4: General Information.Problems, prevention and legality. Since Parts 2 & 3 discuss ways to prevent problems like contamination from developing, this last section is fairly brief, but still useful. The chapter on legality is naturally an explanation of the cognitive dissonance that surrounds this incredibly beneficial fungus.Well done authors! A genuinely useful book that will hopefully help to promote the safe use and cultivation of one of nature's most wonderful creations.
