Comprehensive
Much thanks to Nik Turner and Dave Thompson for collaborating to give us hardcore fans an insider's look back and tell all( if not all at least most) of what was truly one of rock's zany and iconic groups. I was fortunate to have seen the band in NYC in '74 and the show was all I could have hoped for. The first 3 LPs are a classic trilogy and the presentation within itself . Space Ritual is easily among the top 10 live rock albums ever recorded. Was a bit of a or of rock /jazz fusion/ bebop snob at this point but for Hawkwind I had to make an exception. Oh the sound of the electric sax and those audio generators? This was trance music before the genre existed. And highly danceable. The early catalogue today sounds as fresh as ever . With regards to the entourage, their American counterparts would probably be Kesey's bunch. Thanks for the show at Portland Oregon's Star Theater a few years ago Nik.

Very informative and well done
This is quite a nice little set for the early Hawkwind lover. The book is well done and very informative and with many photographs. It also comes with various items that are reproductions of hand bills and tickets from the bands Hey Day Plus a special 7-in record. You don't see very many things like this on the market that concerns Hawkwind. It's a nice addition to any fans collection.

The BEST Hawkwind Book so far
I've read a few...this one is the BEST. Not only in it's beautiful packaging and presentation, but in it's written content. A joy to read and a joy to look at. I've been an avid Hawkwind fan for 40+ years and I learned some new things from this book. It's a MUST HAVE!

Nik Turner embodies the Spirit Of Hawkwind
Nik Turner was a founding and eminently influential member of Hawkwind. He did leave in '76, but did return briefly in the 80s for a short while. Let's face it, Nik was part of the most seminal and important period in the history of Hawkwind. The albums he appeared on are the stuff of legend. Sure, there was a falling out between Nik and Dave Brock and it's sad that they aren't still playing together. However, Nik's historic take on Hawkwind is valid, important, and incredibly entertaining. The band did continue with Nik and there we some great things in the post Nik Turner period ... but who can deny how awesome 1969-1976 were? I mean ... c'mon ... Space Ritual! This whole debate is just as sad as Roger Waters vs. Pink Floyd.Do yourself a favor and try to catch Nik Turner's Hawkwind on tour now. He truly embodies the Spirit Of Hawkwind.

Inside look at the making of a Space Rock band
Good book, lots of great pictures.I have read two previous books about Hawkwind but this one is the best. Gives you an insiders point of view from one of the members who started it all.We had the fortune of seeing Hawkwind in Massey Hall, Toronto, 1975.A fabulous show!

A Splendid Souvenir from the Deep Space Sax Man
I never cease to be depressed at the extreme tribalism of Brock/Turner obsessives, which appears to have clouded the opinions of some of the reviewers here, so I will do my level best to present one that is both balanced and objective, for the benefit of prospective purchasers. Some have said that this book is a badly-written, hagiography, but that is unfair, as it never pretends to be anything other than Nik's personal recollections of what is generally regarded as the classic Hawkwind era and is presented in a narrative, but highly readable style, as told by Nik to Dave Thompson, a prolific, but well-respected music journalist, whose books generally score well on Amazon.Whilst Nik is unsurprisingly keen to promote his own contribution to Hawkwind, he is also generous with his praise of the other musicians involved, including Dave Brock, whilst criticising Dave for his widely acknowledged control freakery and revolving door policy on personnel, which has not always served the band well, in latter years. However, his accusation that Dave's behaviour was motivated by a love of money, is wide of the mark, as Dave has certainly not made any great personal fortune out of Hawkwind, as the music they make has always been decidedly non-commercial.Nevertheless, this is a large, handsome tome, containing a superb collection of band photo's from Nik's archives, which are mostly, though not always, in chronological order, together with pictures of memorabilia, reproductions of a period tour brochure and flyer, Barney Bubbles' tarot cards and a copy of the rare Sonic Attack single, so it is something that most Hawkwind fans will be pleased to own.Despite the animosity engendered by the legal battle over the band name in the 2000's (which could have been easily avoided if the respective parties had just sat down and discussed it like adults), recent interviews with both Nik and Dave have shown that there is still mutual respect for each other's musical abilities, but as they are both now in their 70's, you have to hope they will bury the hatchet in time forone last manic blast into deep space ?

Essential for all Hawkfans
A sumptuous tome, full of rare photos and memorabilia. Nik Turner had an incredible story from Oxford to Margate, to Ladbroke Grove, and then the Great Pyramid. His friendships within Hawkwind in the groundbreaking early years are the focus of the book. Robert Calvert, Barney Bubbles, Dave Brock, Lemmy, Michael Moorcock, Stacia and all of the crew are featured..
