I like the K&N filters however, they're almost always over oiled out of the box. I highly recommend buying a cleaning kit with it initially. Clean it, allow it to dry COMPLETELY and re-oil it. Don't spray to much; just enough to turn each pleat red. The filter media is cotton so just a little oil will go a long way. Being that it's an oiled filter it will collect and retain more dirt so cleaning it every 10K miles is not a bad idea (of course the cleaning frequency is totally dependent on your particular climate).Bottom line: It's a quality filter (when oiled properly), it increases fuel economy by MAYBE one MPG, it's cleanable and reusable, and it makes a the induction noise and supercharger whine a little more noticeable.I give four stars because they ALWAYS come over oiled.

Better performance easily identified the first day. I had a cone filter (Cold Air Intake - CAI) and was not using the stock box, which actually defeated the purpose of a CAI as it would get heat soaked and the supercharger would not provide boost immediately. At WOT (wide open throttle) at 3K rpm it would rev to 4.5K rpm with nominal acceleration achieved.With K & N panel filter in stock box, which is a true CAI, also the same set up as Alta or any other aftermarket, the air is not heat soaked and WOT at 3K rpm the car accelerates and the revs don't just jump up without any actual performance.MCS R53, 2003, 15% Craven pulley, MSD ignition coil and wires, NGK plugs.Thanks!!!!

Lost at least 2-3MPG after installing. It will not increase gas mileage.

Hard to believe that an air filter improved performance for my 2005 Mini Cooper S. Replaced a fairly clean Mann-filter and couldn't believe the change in performance. Supercharger responded better. Will check back in six months after cleaning to report on durability. The price is five times that of a single paper filter.

I have been using K&N since the early 90's. Never been disappointed except the time the oil change place threw mine away and replaced it with a paper one.

KN has upgraded my car with a drop in air filter. Smoother idle and throttle response inmediately. Should be a standard !

For a simple, insurance approved (as in you don't have to tell them) performance filter, I would highly recommend this. I had one in my previous car Focus TDCI and recognised the increased performance so had to get one for my Cooper S. Glad I did. The scream from the supercharger as it takes in a smoother feed of air makes a massive difference in acceleration and the overall ride seems less 'jerky' due to a steady fuel/air feed. MPG has increased a bit too.Would advise once you install this, you reset the car ECU (see how on any good Mini Forum board) - the reset will then work out the new air/fuel feed and give optimum performance.Go for it.
