Singles Collection: 1981-1993

One of my guilty pleasures
Although I can't honestly call Kim Wilde a great, gifted vocalist, still I find this collection pretty fabulous. This may be because I am biased toward UK female pop singers. The only 2 hits I knew when I bought this collection (which spans 1981-1993) are "Kids In America" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On". So, to me, it was like hearing an album of new material. I am assuming that these tracks are arranged in chronological order. The changes in style as the album progresses tell me this. "Kids In America" was a well-known early New Wave hit. It is the first track, and the next 4 retain to some extent the New Wave sound. A change occurs on track 6, "Child Come Away" - a more mid-80's homogenized sound, like 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry". By the time you reach track 7, "Love Blonde", the stripped-down New Wave influence is all but gone. The tracks become harder, louder, more lively and varied. This continues through track 11, and includes Kim's huge radio hit, "You Keep Me Hangin' On".Tracks 12 & 13, "You Came" and "Never Trust A Stranger", bring another shift in gears. Both of these very good tracks are in the neo-disco mode of Rick Astley's hits and Donna Summer's "This Time I Know It's For Real", a prevailing style of the late 80's. In the final 4 tracks, which include a cover of Yvonne Elliman's big hit "If I Can't Have You", things mellow out a little. The tracks lean toward a more sophisticated sound, blending early 90's adult contemporary and club sounds with more disco. The production values are good throughout. Kim has a bright and youthful charm; she takes the material seriously; and she handles each successive stylistic change very well, making her an accomplished pop star. I doubt that Madonna, Whitney or Mariah lost any sleep worrying about Kim (or did they?), but still, as pop music goes, this collection works, and Kim deserves most of the credit.

Very Good Collection
I knew her songs You Keep Me Hangin' On and Kids in America, two big hits here in the US, for years. It wasn't until about 8 years ago that I really began to notice all the great music Kim has made. I've collected all the albums, several collections, and rare material I could find. This collection and the Close album were some of the first Kim releases I bought. It runs from the beginning of her career up to the early 90s. She made an album in 1995 that was very mid-90s R&B styled dance/pop. It is the only weak album she has ever released, in my opinion. So this collection provides a very good overview of her music before that album, and before she decided to retire from music.I love almost all the songs on this cd. The songs vary in style from new wave, rock, pop and dance. I've never liked "Love Blonde" or a couple of the later 90s tracks on here very much. You can hear the huge difference Kim made when she changed from new wave/rock to 80s pop to 90s dance. All of the music she recorded in the 80s is worth a listen. This CD definitely made me want to hear more. I began to collect it all, and found that a lot of her b-sides were better than some of her singles and album tracks.Kim returned to music in 2006 and has continued to record some great songs that hark back to her early and mid-80s sound. This is a great starting point for new listeners or casual fans, but there is a lot more to be found. Many of her albums have been re-released with bonus material that are a must have for fans.

One of the very best from the New Wave era!
Back in the early 80's when I was in college , I rented "Kids in America" (yep, there were stores around campus that would rent LPs) and copied it to a cassette tape. It became one of my favorite exercise workout tapes. Now that I'm in my mid-40's, I'm getting back into the exercise habit to combat weight gain. I began searching for my favorite workout musics from the 80's and I was pleased to find KIM WILDE's "The Singles Collection." Except for "Kids in America" and "Chequered Love," I had forgotten or never heard of the other songs on this CD. I had heard of "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "If I Can't Have You," and a few other songs on this CD, but not sung by KIM WILDE.I've got to admit that I had forgotten that KIM WILE has a great singing voice. With a voice like that, it's a surprise that she hasn't had more success in her singing career (at least in the USA).This CD is exactly one-hour in length. When I want to put in a good one-hour cardio workout, this is one of my favorites. It gets my heart rate up to constant 140-155 beats per minute and a smile on my face.

Nice collection of Kim Wilde's Greatest Hits
Kim Wilde was one of the most popular and successful female artists in the 80s. I think she was more popular in Europe than she was in the US. This is a nice collection but not the ultimate collection. KIm Wilde had more top 20 UK hits than any other female artist. I thnk they need to release a 2-CD collection of all of her hits. Until then, this will do just fine.

Kim Wilde Endures!
I remember Kim Wilde as the MTV video star in "You Keep Me Hanging On". I bought that single on a 45 record, if you believe it. To my great surprise, I have found that I have been listening to her in 2011 as well. The German techno group 'Scooter' covered her classic single Cambodia (from their album Jumping All Over The World). Kim's original single version sounds a lot better, she was far ahead of her time. Another musical connection: According to Wiki, her sister Roxanne is a backup singer for Kylie Minogue.Oh, I was supposed to be reviewing the singles. Each track has a great eighties sound. Almost everything on the album was written by her husband and brother, a real family effort. She was never a one-hit wonder, this collection is a great value. (You have to hear Cambodia).
