Not optimal for the intended application
I'm going to get into a somewhat long winded explanation of why these aren't a good idea to put on a K1200R in 90% of cases before I get into the 10% of cases where it might work, but just to cut to the chase: If you're not racing, you should stick to the stock filter, and if you ARE racing, you should stick to a flat filter like the Wunderlich blue filter, unless you plan to modify your air intake manifold in an extreme manner and remove the snorkel and scoop. If you don't know what any of that means, don't buy this filter. If you want to know why, or you're still unsure if you need this, keep reading. This review is for the K12R, but it's very likely the same will apply to the K12S and other related models for which this filter is intended as they are similar in design and functionality.Okay, let's talk about the design and engineering of the intake system on the K12R.The K12R as you may be aware has a single sided intake, unlike its cousin the K12S, which provides reduced breathing to the engine, and is ultimately responsible for the slight difference in power between the two bikes with the same engine. It's a somewhat common mod to cut open the left side of the airbox and fit a second filter on the bike. I was looking at doing that on mine, and bought this filter, thinking I could put this on the right side and a flat filter on the modded left side (where the ECU is in the way of a conical filter), and modify or replace the snorkels to increase airflow to the engine and produce that "wicked howling sound" that fans of the race kits such as the Evolutionize kit provided. In taking the bike apart and planning this out, this is what I discovered:First off, The snorkel serves important functional purposes tailored toward the stock filter.1) it protects against water and debris, particularly stuff that could be thrown up from the road into the triple clamp area--without the snorkel, grimy water can splash directly on the filter from below, so removing it or simply cutting it back to only protect from drips from above will put your engine at risk in inclement weather.2) It acts to create laminar flow, so air can penetrate the flat filter without losing velocity to turbulence. The ram inlet doesn't direct positive pressure to the intake even at extreme speed, but rather acts like a velocity stack, so air can flow more freely into the low pressure intake. Therefore the flow restriction it provides can't really be measured by the narrowest point, since that's just where the air is moving fastest--it's not creating a pressure wave there that would disrupt airflow. In other words, the idea that the small ram intake is what restricts airflow is false.Secondly, the flat filter is the ideal configuration for the intake shroud and snorkel. The K&N, while conical to present more surface area and less restricted flow, has a blank plastic end cap which bluntly terminates the smooth airflow from the snorkel. Basically, all that high velocity air moving into the intake smacks into the flat end of that filter and gets deflected, causing a lot of turbulence and inefficiency. I would be surprised if a straight drop in replacement of the stock filter with a K&N doesn't result in a DECREASED airflow, further restricting the engine's ability to breathe. If you removed the shroud and snorkel entirely, you would probably see an increased airflow especially at mid to high RPM and low speed, which could net you a few horsepower... however the filter would be very poorly protected from the elements, so unless you're only ever riding it on a track in nice weather, I wouldn't recommend it.I also did some more research on the K&N air filter efficiency and found some empirical data that shows they're really shockingly bad at filtering crap out of your engine. I was expecting poor performance compared to the stock filter, but nowhere near as bad as the data suggests--I was under the impression that the K&Ns would provide better flow due to the higher surface area and better laminar flow design, but it seems it's really the opposite and very little engineering went into proper flow, and they're really just sacrificing filtration. Bottom line is I'd no longer trust them or any high flow filter to protect my engine, and I consider this engine worth protecting, so it's back to stock filters for me.It's really a shame there's no easily workable option that provides better flow and sound and still adequate protection. You could probably gain a few HP using something like the Wunderlich dual intake kit with a second stock filter while still having good protection from the elements and protection for your engine, but the gain wouldn't be that great due to the more turbulent airflow through the hose it uses, and it wouldn't provide the "wicked howling sound", so it's really not worthwhile to me considering the high cost of the kit... and if you're tracking the bike enough to care about those few extra HP, you're probably rebuilding your engine enough that you may as well just run the K&N no snorkel, or no filter at all anyway.

Typical K&N - great filter, great build quality, but expensive (subjective)
Expensive! That's what a lot of people say about K&N filters. However, they are typically less than the cost of two OEM filters, which are not reusable. So in the long run, you can (and do) save money. However, this particular filter (BM-1205) is no longer used in current vehicle production, so I was able to get it less than half of what it normally costs. Also, K&N gets a lot of criticism for "letting in dirt" and for "messing up MAF's". If you use it and reoil it right, it performs just as well as an OEM filter. Its when you over oil it that you start messing up MAF's and when you don't do any maintenance on it is when it starts letting dirt through. I've used them in many of my vehicles over the years and have never had a problem. MY UOA's (used oil analysis) have come out clean over the years I've used this with minimal silicon being reported (silicon = dirt). Also, even though many report having an increase in power/torque/MPG's, I have not. So don't expect to, either. But you will save some money in the long run if you intend to keep your vehicle and you service this filter as recommended.

Clean Air
Perfect fit. Perfect filters. Even come with filter grease for securing seal on filter to intake runner. And reusable as with all K&N filters. Win win win.K&N is the best.👍🏽😇

05, BMW K1200R
This filter is a direct replacement for an '05 BMW K1200R air filter, part number 13717372602. If you check on the parts match it will tell you that it will not fit. This is not the case. Go to the K&N filter cross reference site and you will find that it does indeed fit. And by the way, there is some power gain with this filter and you will be able to hear your intake, provided you have stock exhaust. This filter will not "seal off" if you ride in the rain, which I do frequently. Happy riding.

Need 2 to really Get Going
Works great, install was easy. Just be sure to buy the right amount. My motorcycle required 2. Gives the bike a nice growl.

Tougher than necessary install on BMW K1300 S
Normally a well fitting oe replacement, this item was slightly oversized causing installation issues.

Must have para tu super moto
