After our Ontario contract ended in April, 2007, we decided to produce a higher quality line of knives outside of the mass production capabilities of Ontario. The new ESEE Line (Formerly RAT Cutlery) is considered "mid-tech" in the sense of quality and manufacturing procedures. This means you will notice upgrades to sheathing, fit, finish and detail on ESEE knives. Most important, ESEE is now in a position to respond quickly to new product development and upgrades to existing lines. All of our designs fit the bill of desirable field cutlery when it comes to toughness, comfort, and cutting efficiency. Unlike a lot of manufacturers, ESEE doesn't just release a new knife because it looks cool on paper - we personally field test each new design prototype before is makes it to the production stage. Once we make the final design tweaks and the knife is put into production, we test the design again during field outings Stateside and jungle survival classes in the Peruvian . We also have users around the world that test our knives and submit feedback. When you buy a ESEE knife you know you're getting a knife designed by real users.

Good for emergency use
Unlike regular rainproof notebooks, this one includes a wealth of useful information including a good review on compass use, int'l signalling for rescuers, how to read contour lines on a map, using UTM with GPS and a topo map and a useful pair of compass cards with the most widely used scales in case your compass does not have the required scale, or any scale on it.This lives in my Admin Pouch, I have another, cheaper notebook for everyday note taking that I keep in a small zippy bag, this one is used for instruction and as my strategic reserve in case I ever find myself in a serious situation. I would strongly suggest anyone who is teaching youngsters to get a couple of these, the extras included in the ESSE product are worth twice the price if you have to purchase separately.

Very handy
I volunteer with a wilderness search and rescue group. We have to be very proficient in our navigation skills in the woods. I used to have to carry a protractor and a waterproof notebook before I bought this. At first I thought the protractor was probably going to be a little gimmicky. But, I decided to give it a try on one of our training weekends. I have to say this actually really well and is d finitely accurate. My teammates saw me using it and liked it so much they said they were going to order them one. The writing portion also works well. I've never had any issues with writing in the rain with this pad. I also like the extra how-to's at the back of the pad.
