Q: how does it work? Can i press with my palm?

No, the squeezing is done by the gadget. Slip the tube in the groove (after you've used some of the toothpaste), then turn the lever on the side, to roll the tube to press the paste out of a little more of the tube. The "Tube Squeeze" stays on the toothpaste until you're ready to discard the tube. The "Tube Squeeze" can be used over and over and on anything that comes in a tube. This is my favorite tube roller/squeezer ever; I searched for 30 years, until I found this product. I have never had one break (in 20 years of use); neatens up the bathroom. I now give as stocking stuffers.

Q: how wide is the opening?

About 2-3/8 inch opening, sufficient for the large toothpaste tube ends.

Q: Does this work for a heavier plastic tube?

They work on a normal toothpaste tube. Not sure what you mean by a heavier tube?Jim

I love this thing!! I have used these on all tubes that I have to squeeze to use. My husband loves it for his denture adhesive. I have several of these and all are being used. They just don't seem to wear out.
