Sharpe's Battle: The Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, May 1811

Does any writer of historical fiction more meticulously convey the brutality of combat than Bernard Cornwell? He outdoes himself in “Sharpe’s Battle,” the plot of which is secondary to the horrors that men (and, not incidentally, horses) encounter on the battlefield. And for what? The glory of Napoleon? The legacy of King George or the imprisoned Spanish monarch? Cornwell never directly raises the issue. But he doesn’t have to.

Another epic battle for Sharpe and Harper another desperate step closer to the final day of reckoning and the Generals victory.

A Napoleonic aficionado for decades but just getting into this series of books though seen the TV series decade ago. Can't stop now

Cornwell fans have another great Sharpe novel. I love the detailed battle descriptions, even as Richard Sharpe dodges enemies and obstacles.

I would recommend this book to any of my friends or family. I've got started very late in reading Mr. Cromwell's material. As of the last six months I have gone through three quarters of all your novels. All that is is remaining is the Sharpe's series , I'm at the year 1811. Being behind as I am, I'm going from one read to the next . Excellent reading. Great enjoyment. As I'm a chronic pain patient, it helps me get lost in the story. In some way ease the pain. This in itself says a lot for the powerful writing you do Sir. I thank you for your brilliant writing. Please keep it up for as long as it feels good to do so. Harmon L. Davis lll.

Book was well wore but readable enjoyed the story worth the price I paid definitely not for a collector.

Cornwell is an outstanding writer; I did not enjoy the violence as it become tedious but it is very well done by Cornwell. His research into the era and the 1811 battle history is excellent, of course. Cornwell is master of this time period piece and the Sharpe character is wonderful- heroic, honorable, loyal and a very empathetic protagonist. It is a good ride to just to enjoy history and Cornwell's version through the eyes of Sharpe. It is easy to get into the Sharpe series.

I have slowly worked my way through the Sharpe series and recommend it highly. In particular I enjoy the realistic details of military life and war and Cromwell's concise exposition of the action and tactics he is describing. The writing flows well and he provides vivid descriptions of the action. Though the plots are predictable and interchangeable from one book to another, it is still an enjoyable read and the dramatic tension never waivers. It is worthwhile following up with some historical research after reading his books to compare his descriptions of battles to the actual events. Sharpe's Battle was no exception.

Really enjoyed the great description of the final battle. Immersed you in the fight, fantastic. Another great Sharpe novel from Mr Cornwall.

英陸軍きっての「ならず者」将校リチャード・シャープの活躍を描く傑作シリーズの第11作です。今回の舞台は1811年５月。イベリア半島における英仏間の死闘が苛烈の度を加えつつある中、スペインからポルトガルへの再進出を狙うメッセナ元帥のフランス軍と、反対にポルトガルからスペインを伺うウェリントン将軍の連合軍とが、国境の村ヒゥエンテス・デ・オニョーロで正面から衝突します。　そんな中にあっても、我らが主人公シャープ大尉は相変わらずのトラブル続き。札付きの仏軍精鋭部隊に喧嘩を売ってしまい、所属部隊が全滅の危機に瀕したりします。挙句の果てには、軍首脳部の政治的思惑などもあって軍法会議にかけられそうになるなど、相変らずの暴れん坊振りです。　さて、本作の見所の一つは、英遠征軍内のアイルランド兵たちの存在でしょう。仏軍側は英軍内部に美人エージェントを送り込み、彼らを煽動して英軍の内部崩壊を企てます。故郷を英国に蹂躙され、同胞がロンドンの圧制に喘ぐ中、アイルランド兵たちは遠い異郷の地で英国王のために命を的にして戦っています。そんな彼らの胸中を去来するのは如何なる思いでしょうか。ハーパー軍曹やホーガン少佐などの主要登場人物もアイリッシュですが、特に後者は珍しく複雑な胸中を吐露したりします。ここら辺りの機微は、我々日本人にはなかなかピンと来ないものもありますが、今日に至るアイルランド問題の根の深さを垣間見る気がしました。

So dürfte der übersetzte Titel lauten, sobald dann auch dieser Band übersetzt wird.Im Vorwort erklärt Cornwell wie dieser Roman entstanden ist und wie die geschichtlichen Bezüge sind. Sieht man einmal davon ab, dass seine Romanfigur erfunden ist, eignen sich seine Romane als lebendigen Geschichtsunterricht und dies gilt nicht nur für die Sharpe-Reihe. Zeitlich reiht er sich als 12. Roman in die Reihe ein, allerdings hat der Autor sie nicht alle in dieser Reihenfolge geschrieben, u.a. bei Wikipedia findet man zu Cornwell eine komplette Auflistung der Reihe in Englisch und ihrer deutschen Übersetzungen mit Erscheinungsjahr.Grob teilt sich die Handlung in zwei Teile.Im ersten Teil erleben wir Sharpe, wie er mit seinen Männern im Grenzgebiet zwischen Portugal und dem immer noch von Frankreich besetzten Spanien auf ein Kriegsverbrechen trifft und sich in dem verantwortlichen, französischen Anführer, der spanische Partisanen mit noch schlimmeren Partisanen-Methoden bekämpft, einen persönlichen Feind schafft.Der 2. Teil wird von der eigentlichen Schlacht „Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro“ eingenommen und Sharpes kleinen aber wie immer nicht unwichtigen Beitrag dazu. Die Handlung wird zum größten Teil aus der Perspektive von unserem Titelhelden erzählt mit kleinen Sprüngen zu für den Fortlauf der Geschichte wichtigen anderen Orten und Personen.Die Geschichte enthält auch einen Ausblick auf die verdeckte Kriegsführung, wie durch gezielte Desinformation und Geheimdienstmethoden der Verlauf ganzer Kriege beeinflusst wird, wie diplomatische und politische Fragen die Handlungen der Parteien beeinflussen. Diese Machenschaften an denen Sharpe keinen direkten Anteil hat, die aber dennoch sein Leben und das Leben seiner Leute beeinflussen, werden im Hintergrund geschildert und lockern die Handlung auf. U.a. heben diese Schilderungen die Romane auch über reine Kriegsromane heraus.Cornwells Sharpe Romane eignen sich besonders auch für Leser zum Einstieg in englische Originalausgaben. Sein Schreibstil ist bildhaft, der verwendete Wortschatz besonders in den E-Book Ausgaben leicht beherrschbar und die Grammatik verständlich, ein durchschnittlich gutes Oberklassen-Englisch dürfte ausreichend sein.

I have been reading the Sharpe series in chronological order, so this is my 12th book and my 12th review. The problem with reviewing the Sharpe series is that they are written to a well worked formula and it becomes difficult to find anything new to say about them. Again Sharpe finds himself in the thick of it, in yet another battle in the Peninsular Wars, he has hateful enemies amongst the French as well as amongst his own forces, where there are those that wish to wreck his career. Not so much of a developing love interest this time, but there is an interesting woman involved in the book. All Sharpe books contain lots of action, and this one does contain more than most. The whole book is interwoven with historical facts, but when the author does divert from them for the stories sake, he always has very good historical notes at the end of the book to inform you of this.You may ask why did I give this book five stars if it is so predictable, basically, because the books are well written in an entertaining style and are just great fun to read. So much so, that I’m moving straight on to the next book in the series.
