A Picasso Portfolio: Prints from The Museum of Modern Art

A unique collection of Picasso's sketches and prints
I saw this special exhibit of Picasso's lesser known sketch and print work at the MOMA this April and wanted to get the book in order to remember it. I resisted buying it in the Museum Store because I knew it would be cheaper on Amazon and it was! Anyway, the art in this collection shows Picasso's range and his many interests. It is especially interesting to see his cubist style in development as you look at the works in this collection. If you're a Picasso-lover, you'll be glad you got your hands on this book because it lets you see a different side of his work. If you're not a huge Picasso fan, the strikingly beautiful prints in this collection may win you over!

A Picasso Portfolio.
I'm not a printmaker myself but I've always appreciated the work that goes into the process of printmaking and found the development of prints fascinating. This rather lovely hardback book covers all periods of Picasso`s printmaking output and contains 137 plates consisting of etchings, lithographs and lino-cuts. The bulk of the illustrations are monochrome - that is, black ink on paper - but the reproductions capture the yellowish tint of the ground. The lithographs and linoleum cuts are generally in full-colour and there is a smattering of additional figurative illustrations within the text. The book has been published by MoMA, New York and the works have been drawn from their extensive print collection. One sequence of prints, presented in a brief chapter "Abstracting the bull" provides an insight into Picasso`s working method as he pares down his image to it's very essence; a distilled, stylised contour drawing conveying power through simplicity. There are a number of similar print sequences making this volume a useful study in how to develop a theme with logic, wit and creativity. This is a fine study of one aspect of Picasso`s art, well worth adding to your collection of art books.
